If you follow our site with any regularity, you know that I’ve been adding Kenner/Hasbro’s long line of Collector Series, Action Collection, and general 12 Inch Figures into our Research Droids Reviews database. As the volume of figures added grew large, Readers began to ponder how many of the original Kenner “mini-figures” were released in the one-sixth scale in the modern Hasbro Star Wars line. Well, wonder no more. I took the time to prepare a vintage versus modern 12″ counterpart to answer the questions. But before you check it out, let’s look at some interesting facts.
96 total vintage Kenner figures were considered. I’m using the same golden number as Hasbro currently uses. This total includes all of the C-3PO and R2-D2 variations. Specific deco variations, color changes, COOs, and everything else “not obvious” were eliminated. Jabba the Hutt and The Max Rebo Band were also ignored because they don’t fall under the standard “basic figures” lineup.
Out of 96 total characters, Hasbro only produced 55 of them. The other 41 were ignored.
Hasbro got to 57.3% of the line before calling it quits at the end of 2005 right before the launch of The Saga Collection. This stat means that 42.7% of the original vintage character selection was “ignored” for other offerings instead. Some characters never produced were on rumor lists for years.
Return Of The Jedi got sucker-punched the hardest. Characters from the final installment of the Original Trilogy make up 65.9% of the 41 characters not produced in the 12″ line. A New Hope makes up 7.3% of the missing figures, while The Empire Strikes Back makes up 26.8%.
Multiple versions of the same 12″ characters were produced throughout the years. I chose the one that I feel best represents the original vintage Kenner figure. Your mileage will probably vary. If you question anything, I will try to provide my response to why.
Some characters are matched because they’re the closest possible placeholder for the vintage Kenner release. I tried to be limited with this approach, but I didn’t want to avoid including Death Star Trooper and Imperial Officer here. For obvious reasons, they’re included despite not representing the vintage Kenner figure 100%.
One thing this analysis made me realize was that Hasbro was about as gun-shy to produce aliens and skiff guards from Jabba’s palace as well as bar patrons from Chalmun’s cantina during 1995-2005 as they are today. It makes ZERO sense. What is their defect with this?
Anyway, please enjoy this entirely trivial and useless bit of information. And thank you for reading. Links for both the vintage Kenner figures and their 12″ counterparts are provided below.
