Why The Vintage Collection Will Tread Water Until It's Inactive Again: Part II

After my nausea subsided from being slapped in the face by boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes of Rey (Island Journey) action figures from three years ago, I became even more jaded by what else I found at Ollie’s. (more….)

One case of the hugely successful and popular TVC Rogue One Imperial Stormtrooper (VC140) figure hung from the pegs. And it wasn’t the first version with the yellowing torsos. This was the second run version with equal whiteness throughout. How can a figure now sold out across the entire web and going for anywhere from $24.99 to $39.99 on the aftermarket be found at a discount outlet for $5.99 each from a solid case assortment? Something is very, very out of place here.

Look at the prices on eBay for this figure. It’s astounding for a reissued figure to command this much. But we’re seeing the same trends with the reissued TVC 1.0 releases as well, so perhaps this is no surprise.

So, in addition to the Sequel Trilogy destroying Star Wars toy merchandising as we know it, we also have major distribution issues. Why would any retailer (including Hasbro) dump their remaining stock to an outlet like Ollie’s without trying to sell it online for full price? This is something else that’s killing The Vintage Collection.

Not only are we fighting an uphill battle with so few releases and boring character selection, but we also see some of their most successful releases get dumped at clearance outlets. How does anything remotely like this happen? This must change if the line is to remain healthy.
