Nielsen have added episode 5 of Andor to their weekly streaming charts. A quick reminder, episode 5 was the middle part of the Aldhani arc. And the series is rapidly losing viewers. Click through for more!
With episode five Andor drops to #10 in the original streaming series charts, with 356 million minutes, whereas She-Hulk rebounds with the penultimate episode and is the most watched Disney+ series with 454 million minutes (we talk about early October here, since the charts have a four week delay). She-Hulk dropped out of the top 10 original streaming series charts midseason, a fate Andor may share next week.
So chances are Andor may drop out of the top 10 entirely next week. It seems the quite grounded and serious take on Star Wars is not so popular with quite a substantial number of fans, who apparently want space battles, aliens, lightsabers and Jedi, or at least bounty hunters, none of which you can find in Andor.
With 356 million minutes Andor has not even half half of the viewing minutes of Obi-Wan Kenobi (733 million minutes) and The Book of Boba Fett (744 million minutes for the first Mandalorian episode which boosted viewing minutes considerably) at the some point in their seasons, comparing numbers for episodes 5 here. And both Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett have much shorter episodes and overall runtime for both series is therefore also much shorter than Andor with its 50 minute episodes, which means the number of viewers for Andor is not even half of what Kenobi and Book of Boba Fett had, since the average Andor episode is about 30-50% longer than the average Obi-Wan Kenobi or The Book of Boba Fett episode.
Amazon’s Rings of Power though is still close to 1 billion minutes, there has been virtually no change for the series in weeks. Viewing minutes are extremely stable, always just shy of 1 billion minutes (988 million minutes this week), meaning people keep watching and don’t tune out. Nielsen added the penultimate episode to their charts. And Rings of Power once more has more viewing minutes than House of Dragon, but the latter is also available on cable.
Let’s see if Andor can rebound in the coming weeks or if it will be the first live action Star Wars series to drop out of the original series charts. The ratings themselves will have no impact on the series, season 2 was greenlit long ago and filming will begin soon. But with those numbers it’s one of the least popular Star Wars and Marvel live action series on Disney+ to date. Actually, only Ms Marvel had even worse numbers than Andor. She-Hulk never dropped below 390 million minutes, with much shorter episodes.
However, Lucasfilm most likely had different expectations for Andor, they certainly know the series is not a crowdpleaser like The Mandalorian or Obi-Wan Kenobi. And it’s still the second highest rated series on Disney+ at the moment. But the question remains if Lucasfilm will greenlight similar projects like Andor going forward when it has even less than half of the viewers the other series, thus far, have had. So far the studio has shown some will to experiment with series like Star Wars Visions and upcoming projects like The Acolyte will certainly also be different.
