New Star Wars Movie Already Delayed!

You can’t make this up… at least one recently announced Star Wars movie is already delayed and has been pushed back!

Now, to be fair, one reason could be the writers strike, which has currently halted many productions. Another reason may be James Cameron’s schedule and how much time he needs to finish his 100 Avatar sequels. Disney has shuffled around almost all of the upcoming Disney, Marvel, Avatar and Star Wars movies! Click through to find out more!

Coming to a galaxy near you somewhat later…

The December 2025 Star Wars movie will now be released (maybe) in May 2026! In December 2026 yet another new Star Wars movie will be released. What happened to those “Star Wars fatigue” statements by Iger after Solo where its timing was said to be the main reason for its failure at the box office?
Yet another Star Wars movie will then be released in December 2027. The May 2026 movie will (maybe) be the Rey movie. It is not known what the other two movies are about. But chances are very high those are the Dave Filoni and James Mangold movies. Although Mangold first has to survive the upcoming box office disaster that Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny will almost certainly be.

So to reiterate… new Star Wars movies in May 2026, December 2026 and December 2027. Is this what Kathleen Kennedy was recently talking about when she said Star Wars would adopt the James Bond model when it comes to movie releases, with one movie every couple of years? Sure doesn’t look like that when we get three movies in 19 months. So she was talking nonsense. Again.

James Cameron’s numerous Avatar sequels are also delayed, which may have caused Disney to reshuffle their release schedule to begin with. Since Avatar and Star Wars should not overlap of course.

Avatar 3 now has the December 2025 release date previously intended for Star Wars. Avatar 4 will be released in 2029 (!) and Avatar 5 is currently scheduled for 2031 (!!!). They take all this time to further refine the VFX tech. Each Avatar movie has been a technical spectactle thus far and Cameron is probably one of the few old school filmmakers like George Lucas who always want to innovate with one of his new movies. James Cameron would be 77 in 2031. So Avatar 5 could be his last movie ever.

Marvel movies are also moved around, most are pushed back, some are moved forward a bit. The Avengers movie has been pushed back a full year. And that in turn pushed back the follow-up Avengers movie also another year, both movies will now be released in May 2026 and May 2027. This is a long time since Endgame, seven years without an Avengers movie. The current legal issues surrounding the Kang actor may have contributed here.

And yes, you read that right! Disney actually plans to release Avengers: The Kang Dynasty on May 1st 2026 and the Star Wars movie (probably the Rey movie) on May 19th 2026. Just 18 days apart… this is such a genius plan. What are they thinking here? At least one of the movies will suffer. Does Bob Iger want Star Wars to fail?

The delays mean that we have to wait another three years for Star Wars to (maybe) return to cinemas. You are wise to have your doubts about any of the announced plans though. Announced Star Wars movies have a habit of getting cancelled. Also, maybe Disney and Bob Iger come to their senses and decide it’s maybe not a good idea after all to release the new Avengers movie and Star Wars within less than three weeks of each other.

If things work according to plan it would mean mean there will have been an almost seven year hiatus after The Rise of Skywalker. And then they will give us two movies in the span of just a couple of months and three in only 19 months. Let’s hope Lucasfilm can pull that off.

You can read the Variety article for the full list of movies that were shuffled around by Disney.
