Lucasfilm Releases First Official Stills For Skeleton Crew

We had some leaked images before, but about 4 months before Skeleton Crew will come to Disney+ Lucasfilm is slowly gearing up its marketing efforts for the next Star Wars series. They released a couple of official photos from the show and some basic info. Skeleton Crew was ready for release in 2023 but was delayed because of Bob Iger’s new content strategy, filming ended in January 2023, this has been sitting in the vault for some time already. Click through for the images!

This is an old leaked set photo… inside the article you see it after post!

I have a bad feeling about this…

Yes, I know it’s kind of fashionable as of late to be critical of all things Star Wars on Disney+. But the leaked trailer already gave off a weird vibe, as in, it looked like “Earth” and as if cars were on the streets on whatever planet the kids are on.

And you can tell, they lean heavily into 1980s kids movie with Skeleton Crew.

This is the same scene as in the leaked photo, only slightly different. we can tell that the kid playing Max Rebo Jr. is partially CGI. What was speculated to be from a dress rehearsal turns out to be a scene from the actual show….

Did this cost 180 million as well? You’d think this is a low budget production based on the quality of the CGI and Volume work here:

The shot of two of the kids on a sidecar speeder looks awful. We talk 1950s rear projection studio shot awful, when you never believed for one second the actor(s) were actually on location. This almost looks like something from a video game. If this is the Volume, and it sure looks like it, then they really need to tweak the process, this is as bad as ancient rear projection. This looks really, really bad.

Steven Spielberg wants his walkie talkies back…

The only thing missing here is ET riding shotgun. It’s easy to see what they are aiming for here, but it just doesn’t say “Star Wars”. It says “ET” with a weird blue alien kid. Also, walkie talkies? Really? Couldn’t they at least give them proper lady shavers as seen in The Phantom Menace?

We now have 1970s flashlights in Star Wars…

We had home depot metal detectors in The Acolyte. Now we have off the shelf (as far as I can tell) flashlights. Because, you know, ANY kids movie from the 1980s or so had them use walkie talkies and flashlights. Again, I see what they are aiming for here but it looks literally like Goonies or ET and not like Star Wars.

This is the official blurb:

“When four kids make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, they get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy,” the show’s official synopsis reads. “Finding their way home, meeting unlikely allies and enemies will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.”

Skeleton Crew also features  several child actors, the four leads are Ravi Cabot-Conyers (Wim), Kyriana Kratter (KB), Robert Timothy Smith (Neel), and Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Fern).

Skeleton Crew will be released on December 3rd.

What do you think? This looks like Stranger Things – The Star Wars Edition. Only five years late.

Credible leakers (Making Star Wars and Bespin Bulletin) reported behind the scenes issues. Apparently Lucasfilm did not know what to do with the show, and apparently plans changed as they were filming and the end result is nothing anyone expected or is overly happy with. According to these reports test screenings (internal) were not well received.

I have the sinking feeling this could be an even bigger flop than The Acolyte. I truly hope the show will be good. Also, since four young kids are the stars here it would be important for them not to be caught in the crossfire, they are just kids and they do whatever it is the director(s) and writer(s) tell them to do.

According to the co-showrunner Jon Watts Jude Law mentored the kids as well and also was their co-acting coach, which makes sense, since Law has plenty of experience. About Jude Law: his character name has been revealed as well, he’s playing Jod Na Nawood. I personally would have preferred Bob Loblaw for his name, since Ron Howard is certainly on good terms with Disney he surely would have given his approval.

But what do you think? Do the set photos make you feel optimistic? Or do you feel it will be a disaster?

And for Hasbro’s sake I hope they do not have to support this show with any toys. At all.

It will be a long, dark winter. Unless you live in Australia or New Zealand.
