Destroyer Droid - ROTS - Basic (III 44)

Destroyer Droids are designed for one purpose only; the complete annihilation of their targets. With twin blasters and protective shields, they are a deadly threat to Republic forces.

One thing about writing Research Droids Reviews is that you always learn something new. Take for example the droideka. Did you know there are over a dozen varieties? And did you know that not all of the same ones appeared in the Prequel Trilogy? Wookieepedia goes into some pretty good detail about the various types, information we really won’t go into here, but our eyes feasted upon the P-series and Q-series destroyer droids/droidekas. For example, the P-series destroyer droid participated in the Battle of Naboo in Episode I and the Q-series droideka protected General Grievous’ Invisible Hand. Fascinating to know that there were so many different types in our Star Wars films, huh? Obviously, Hasbro didn’t make a mental note of this when they brought action figures of them into the basic figure lines, but it’s still cool to know that there are variances that exist, even if we can’t really see them at 3.75” scale.

Just like the B1 Battle Droid (III 17) and the B2 Super Battle Droid (III 4) in the Revenge Of The Sith line, the Destroyer Droid was also taken from Hasbro’s 2002 SW “Saga” line and released as Destroyer Droid (‘02 #48). Believe it or not, we think this action figure hold up quite well all of these years. Hasbro tightened up the figure with a new paint job, but they kept the same action features in place to add some extra value. You know how it goes at this point. While it’s hard to anatomically assimilate a Destroyer Droid’s parts to a human, we’ll try and do our best nonetheless. The “shoulders” on the Destroyer Droid are still terribly loose. They need to be to activate the action feature. The “arms” move up and down with the press of a switch on the figure’s “back”. Again, this isn’t something that collectors care too much about, but Hasbro obviously didn’t want to add to this figure’s tooling budget by removing it to give us a normal action figure.

The Destroyer Droid won’t be the most popular figure in the Revenge Of The Sith line. When figures keep getting released and released over and over again they lose their magic and become a little bit boring. And let’s face it. Because the Destroyer Droid is classified as a Collection 1 figure, there aren’t going to be any extras included here (like the cool display bases) which would really help this figure feel like a necessary purchase. A simple yet important retooling of the sculpt would have benefitted this figure tremendously. Please don’t misinterpret all of this criticism as utter disdain for the figure. We actually like it very much. We still can’t tell you if it’s a P-series or Q-series droideka, but does it really matter? These Separatist droids continue to be a burden to the Republic in Revenge Of The Sith and that’s probably what is most important. It’s nice to get another stab at this core Separatist Destroyer Droid, but we’re not sure if you’ll need another one.
