Bounty hunter Boba Fett uses many devices to capture his quarry.
It was inevitable for Boba Fett to become a candidate for the Movie Heroes line wasn’t it? Actually, we’re surprised it took as long as it did to see him confirmed for the line. Part of the last wave of the 2012 Movie Heroes lineup, his future is uncertain because no online or brick and mortar store show that the wave in which he is part of will ever be available for pre-order. It’s a new year and that means a new line look this time. New product under that line look has already hit and besides a few obscure appearances online with international seller in Germany and France (and a few other smaller countries), this fourth wave of figures is pretty much nonexistent (right now – anything can change of course). Boba Fett is the “final” figure in the Star Wars [The Phantom Menace 3D] Movie Heroes line. We wish we could tell you it’s just a straight repack, but it isn’t and is a unique version of the character. And you might actually cringe when we tell you that Hasbro has given Boba Fett an all-new jetpack with a rappelling action feature for this Movie Heroes version. How is that for Murphy’s Law?
Boba Fett is essentially a straight repack of 2004’s VOTC Boba Fett figure. This has been the standard “go to” figure for when the need of a Return Of The Jedi version of Boba Fett arises. Most recently, it was used as a running change of the Boba Fett (VC09) figure for the “Revenge Of The Jedi” chase figures in 2011 in The Vintage Collection. With a stupendous paint job and a non-removable helmet, it’s still is one of the greatest versions of Boba Fett released. We’re just very surprised that Hasbro has selected this version (with so much articulation) for the Movie Heroes line, especially when they have an all-new reduced articulation version of Boba Fett in 2012’s SW [TPM 3D] Bespin Battle Battle Packs set. (Couldn’t they have just updated the jetpack to include an action feature on this version instead? We get so easily confused with their decisions. They haven’t been incredibly consistent. Is this a kids’ line or not?!) Believe it or not, we had a very difficult time looking for paint variances comparing the 2004 VOTC version against the Movie Heroes version. That actually amazes us that they’re relatively identical that many years apart.
So this means that Boba Fett comes with 14 points of premium articulation, most of which are ball-jointed points. The all-new feature here is the jetpack with a “climbing” or “rappelling” action feature. The mechanics of it work very well and we had fun messing around with it. But adult collectors may not be impressed with how bulky it makes the figure look. Accepting Hasbro’s premise that this is indeed a figure for kids, hopefully you’ll be able to find some use for this figure or at worst appreciate the humor of it. Boba Fett also comes with the same blaster that the 2004 VOTC figure had. We did notice that Boba Fett’s grip is wider for some reason and it’s a bit more difficult for him to securely grasp the blaster rifle. Perhaps the years are catching up to the tooling now. Boba Fett is obviously a very popular Star Wars character and it makes total sense to see his character get released in multiple formats. This twist provides kids with this favorite character while adding a special “play value” premium for them as well. This is definitely the way for Hasbro to save some costs. Use existing tooling to save costs that can be applied to collector-focused figure and add the action feature to the accessory and not the figure. If they continue on this path, perhaps collectors of all ages will remain happy.
