Boba Fett, who is hired by the evil Empire, is the most dangerous bounty hunter in the galaxy. He wears a helmet that completely hides his face. Boba Fett carries lots of weapons to capture whomever he is chasing, including a jetpack that fires missiles. He is a skilled pilot with a powerful ship, Slave I, which is packed with equipment to track down his prey and escape any attack.
Does it ever frustrate you that an action feature ruins what is potentially a tremendous update to a Star Wars action figure? That’s precisely how we feel about The Original Trilogy Collection’s Boba Fett action figure. Boba Fett is simply a repack of 2003’s SW Boba Fett (The Pit Of Carkoon) (‘03 #08) figure, but Hasbro has once again revised the colors and some of the paint operations for this release. If you recall, Hasbro unintentionally released two different Boba Fett color schemes in 2003 (technically an error and a correction – both of which are screen inaccurate since Boba Fett wore a light gray jumpsuit in Episode VI). This makes the third unique paint job for this Boba Fett sculpt. They’ve also glued his cape in place which makes it non-removable now should you decide to try to remove it. A figure that gets more flack that in our estimation than it should receive, this particular Boba Fett brought from impressive points of articulation that worked very well with its action styled pose creating a figure that was hard to dislike. Not everything about this Boba Fett is perfect of course, but we have to give credit where credit is due. Because of that, we cannot say too much bad about this release of Boba Fett.
Our biggest bone of contention is the action feature added here. Action features are ever acceptable in our eyes, but many kids seem to enjoy them so Hasbro peppers them into their action figures here and there to make the masses as happy as possible. But for a collector, Boba Fett comes across and clumsy and annoying loose-jointed. By pressing down the rocket on his jetpack Boba Fett’s arms will raise and lower as you push down and let up the rocket. There isn’t new ground broken with the action figure and it’s really unnecessary. Hasbro may have found it a bigger benefit to include some additional points of premium articulation instead of developing the action feature mechanics to build into the sculpt. Hey, that’s just our opinion. Take it or leave it. On a more positive note, Boba Fett has been sculpted very dynamically. There is action already present in his stature, so the inclusion of 12 points of articulation work work to enhance this. Oh, and then it is further enhanced by the accessories. They’re a big part of this figure too so let’s mention them.
Boba Fett has been sculpted to interact with a very neat environmental display stand. Hasbro sculpted a brilliant “flames accessory” which nicely plugs into the jetpack seamlessly to give the illusion that Boba Fett is blasting off or trying to escape an enemy. The “flames” environmental display stand has a terrible center of gravity, but can balance the Boba Fett figure if you’re careful. Boba Fett also comes with a blaster rifle and blast effect for extra play value. But it’s really the details added to the Boba Fett figure itself that make this release special again. Including the action feature and rangefinder, Boba Fett comes with an impressive 12 points of articulation. The hinge-jointed right knee and the ball-jointed left ankle work flawlessly to give Boba Fett that extra display edge you need to achieve even more dynamic poses that how he naturally appears. Boba Fett (OTC #14) is not perfect. And we’re not trying to trick you into buying a bridge. But we can’t help liking this figure than maybe perhaps more than we should. He pales in comparison to the VOTC Boba Fett, but they’re meant for two completely different audiences. Just keep that in mind.
Status: Boba Fett is a repaint of 2003's SW Boba Fett (The Pit Of Carkoon) ('03 #08) figure. (This makes the third unique paint scheme for this sculpt; two different colors in 2003 and now this one in 2004.)
