A Bith alien from the planet Clak'dor VII, Figrin D'an is the Kloo Horn playing front man of the Mos Eisley Cantina band the Modal Nodes, commonly nicknamed the Bith Band. Figrin is an avid gambler, and he pays off his debts by playing gigs, while trying to keep his band mates out of trouble. Like most of his alien race, Figrin remains neutral in the politically complex Republic, preferring to stay outside the conflict between the Rebels and the Imperials.

Before their days playing at the cantina, the Modal Nodes, like so many bands, had their ups and downs as their front man, Figrin D'an, struggled to master his demons. The band accepted a contract to be the house musicians for Jabba the Hutt, but once they realized Jabba's reputation for executing "employees" who displeased him, they began to regret taking the job. Breaching their contract, Figrin D'an took a lucrative offer to play at a wedding, knowing that the job would give them enough money to escape from Jabba's Palace. On the night of the wedding, Figrin's penchant for gambling had him placing their payment on a game, much to the chagrin of his bandmates. Luckily for them, Jabba had heard of their breach of contract and came after the band just as a troop of Stormtroopers raided the casino, creating a distracting fight that allowed the band to escape. Soon after the Modal Nodes reached safety, Figrin D'an lost control of his gambling again, this time wagering the band's instruments. He lost. At the band's insistence, Figrin played another hand in hopes of winning back their equipment and was finally successful. After the incident, Figrin cleaned up his act, and the band played throughout the galaxy before landing their regular gig in the Mos Eisley Cantina.

Two categories of Star Wars characters that are always a safe bet for all licensees to take a risk manufacturing collectibles for including Jabba’s palace denizens and Chalmun’s cantina patrons. No matter what size, characters from these environments will always remain hot commodities for overzealous Star Wars fans who prefer the Original Trilogy to anything else. Let’s face it, aliens, in general, are typically a huge part of the collecting community’s vernacular. Who doesn’t want the latest Ponda Baba, Ree-Yees, Yak Face or Momaw Nadon to grace their collections? So when Sideshow chose the next character to develop in their low run but trendy Life-Size Busts line, they chose Figrin D’an, a striking and very memorable character from the Modal Nodes and perhaps one of the few Star Wars cantina aliens with a decent amount of screen time. The cantina as full of unlimited aliens, each with unique looks and features, but Figrin D’an along with his bandmates help to leave an indelible mark on the psyche of Star Wars fans everywhere. Now Sideshow Collectibles has created a Life-Size Bust of the character to ensure that the mark will never have a chance of being removed.

The Figrin D’an Life-Size Bust is another amazing release from Sideshow Collectibles. At this point, they have nearly mastered this 1:1 scale line and pretty much every character they make is a work of art. That much is true. The most striking feature of Figrin D’an is his bulbous cranium. It’s tall, and it’s large, and it’s full of warts and moles and plenty of pores to give it a completely believable appearance. It has multiple layers of paint that give it depth, realism and even a “dirty” appearance, probably from sweating to the oldies at Chalmun’s Cantina. As you move down towards his face, you’ll see two gorgeous painted and gleaming eyes. But they’re not the large black pearls you might have expected there. The great thing about Life-Size Busts is that they accentuate details that we may miss while viewing the characters on the big screen (or small screen) including color and textures. Figrin D’an has black eyes with a dark cobalt blue accent going around the circumference of the eyeballs. It’s only visible in bright lights, but it gives Figrin D’an a look that we have never noticed before until now. Again, smaller scaled collectibles like Hasbro’s action figures will never show such fine details like this.

You will also find that there are a ton of other beautiful hand-painted details on the Figrin D’an Mini Bust. The mouth area has darker shades while the areas outside of the mouth and around the eyes are darker than the top of his head, yet lighter than the center of his mouth where the tip of his instrument goes. Sideshow has given Figrin D’an premium soft-goods clothing as well. The fabric is velvety to the touch, and Sideshow Collectibles has sewn in real functioning fabric snaps. You can open his shirt and pull the flap down or leave the button snaps closed. (See our gallery for this detail.) We love how Sideshow has kept the bases of the pieces in the Life-Size Bust collection consistent. So as you might expect, Figrin D’an sits atop the same base, and his nameplate is embossed in a beautiful contrasting green font with a clear protective covering. Limited to only 250 pieces, Figrin D’an is one of the smallest run edition sizes made to date in the Life-Size Busts line. Over time, this collectible may command a costly premium on the aftermarket down the road. But if you’re a collector of this line you probably don’t care about such things. Because these gorgeous works of art are not something from which you’ll want to part.
