Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Training) - POTJ - Basic

Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Knight training under Jedi Master Qui-Gin Jinn, has proved his loyalty to the Council and Jedi Code time and again. In missions involving great danger, the Jedi don specially made training gear that protects them in close combat without hindering their movement.

In the Power Of The Jedi line, Hasbro developed three action figures based on the three main characters of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Darth Maul (Sith Apprentice), Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Training) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Training) are the three action figures we’re talking about here and they all have been based on sketches drawn by artists during the preproduction of Episode I. Not exact “replicas” of the sketches, most of the elements of the costumes were carried forward but the likenesses of the actors from the film, and not the concept art, were used for the portraits. After all was said and done, Hasbro’s interpretations of these characters was solid and it was cool to see how art looks three-dimensionally in action figure format. With simple articulation but very nice sculpts, these three action figures added the first three Prequel Trilogy concept art action figures introduced collectors to a new branch of Star Wars collecting.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Training) may be the most bittersweet of the three. The design of the figure is excellent (we’re talking about the details in the sculpt and portrait), but the pose of the figure is awkward. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Training) looks as if he is dragging his feet with a head on view. And what accentuates this oddness is his “dead” right arm that makes him appear if he had a stroke and can no longer move that extremity. That being said, we are indeed fond of this action figure. It offers the most versatility of the three concept figures in the Power Of The Jedi basic figure line. This is due to the fact that Hasbro has included a removable blast shield helmet. It fits perfectly on his head and he looks fantastic with or without wearing it. The removable blast shield helmet is an artistic triumph. Perhaps you may overlook just how much detail Hasbro has added to it. But if you inspect it carefully you’ll find an insane amount of detail, like cracks and damage and a wash that brings this to this surface.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Training) comes with seven points of articulation. Aside from the standard six, Hasbro has also added a swivel left elbow. This extra point of articulation really doesn’t offer that much more height, like for lightsaber battling, but it does for an extra plane of rotation to the collector and adds a nice additional amount of articulation for display purposes. We’ve already commented on the sculpt. It’s pretty good. But the paint job is even better. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Training) is wearing a uniform that is quite dark and that closely resembles the undergarments of a Jedi Knight. It’s made up of a vest and an undershirt, so really it’s only the darker color of navy blue that distracts your eyes from seeing it as this. He also is wearing gauntlets on his arms and lower leg armor on his legs. His stance is widened and his head is ever so slightly looking upwards paying attention to the training (or dangers) ahead. Overall, we’re satisfied with this release. But Hasbro could certainly make him better.
