Aurra Sing (Bounty Hunter) - POTJ - Basic

Once a Jedi apprentice trained by the mysterious Jedi Master known as the Dark Woman, Aurra Sing left the Jedi order before completing her training. Aurra Sing now utilizes her prowess as an experienced bounty hunter. Terse and paranoid, Sing is a formidable adversary who despises Jedi.

Many parts of Episode I were sensory overload. But one scene that may be the worst was the Boonta Eve Pod Race. We won’t get off on a tangent on how much we loathed that entire sequence of the film, but we will tell you that an obscure background character came the forefront of collector consciousness because of it. Noticed almost immediately standing on the sidelines minding her business during the events of the racing competition, Aurra Sing was a character that most fan boys knew they needed in their collections as an action figure. Looking like death warmed over in a tight red leotard, a long pony tail from the top of her bald head, fingers almost as long as Arsenio Hall’s and an arsenal of weaponry, she became one of the most sought after action figures and Star Wars collectors everywhere began begging Hasbro to make her for us in 3.75” scale. They obliged. In 2001, she was one of the first releases that year and she met many demands we had for her, although most felt that Hasbro could have done better. With a fair likeness, an average sculpt, and not so great articulation, Aurra Sing (Bounty Hunter) grabbed the attention of collectors because of her mystery and she was an obscure female bounty hunter. What risk was there for Hasbro to attempt her?

Aurra Sing (Bounty Hunter) is no better than “good” as far as we’re concerned. She does resemble the onscreen character pretty well, but we feel that the action figure would need some impressive updating before we would be completely satisfied with it. In our opinion, Hasbro wasted to premium ball-jointed shoulders on her. What’s the point of ball-jointed shoulders when the rest of the arm contains no other articulation? OK, so you can swing her arms in any direction you wish, but does that make sense, especially when holding a gun or blaster? We think not. Additionally, Aurra Sing (Bounty Hunter) comes with no waist articulation and her swivel hips are cut at an extremely awkward angle which provide no true forward-stepping movement. They just sort of go out to the side is all. It’s exciting to get background characters in the Power Of The Jedi. That’s the premise on which the Kenner Star Wars action figure line was built. But when they aren’t given articulation that makes any sense, the efforts can be interpreted as futile by collectors. Without elbow joints, how can any action figure hold a gun properly? Aurra Sing (Bounty Hunter) can only hold it out in the open airspace, and not even in a believable fashion. It’s very disappointing.

Where Aurra Sing (Bounty Hunter) fails in articulation, she more than makes up for it with deco. Aurra Sing (Bounty Hunter) has an excellent paint job. Her outfit is dirty in spots. She has the appropriate dark circles around her eyes. Her extraordinarily large orange ponytail is decorated with ornaments and beads. These details looks fantastic and make us forget about where she fails a little bit more easily. Hasbro even graciously added a functioning holster for one of her blaster pistols. It would, of course, have been nice if we received two, but we’ll take the one. Clearly there is a lot offered here, but when the key components just aren’t up to snuff, it sort of puts a bad spin on the overall action figure. Aurra Sing (Bounty Hunter) comes with a very large and long blaster rifle. She is able to hold it in her hand, but it looks ridiculous, and the rigid strap doesn’t allow you to naturally drape it across her body. It looks silly. But, if you find a way to pose her hand up in the air, you can make her hand hold the top of the barrel with the gun in a completely horizontal position. This pose actually looks pretty cool. The point here is that you have options with Aurra Sing (Bounty Hunter). Better will come, and we’re not satisfied with this release. But it isn’t the worst we’ve seen.
