Some adult collectors are unable to separate kids toys from adult collectibles. Ironically, action figure, no matter how complicated or how collector-friendly are all designed for kids to begin with and it is the kid market on which toy companies base their decisions. What confuses us is the somewhat tepid reception for the Talking Star Wars Figures line by hardcore adult collectors. Here is a line that boasts proudly that it is geared toward younger collectors first. But Disney has amped up the quality to hopefully engage the older (and often crotchety) collector market by making TOYS that can hopefully appeal to Star Wars fans of all ages. Not all our on board with these figures and that’s fine. But to discredit them as wasted plastic would be a crime. The Star Wars Talking Figures line is already exceeding expectations and Disney hopes that it will flourish and continue to gain momentum at the retail level. With reports of sell-outs already making news on various Star Wars collecting sites whether through forums or comments, it seems that this is a new line to watch, purchase, and enjoy. Releasing one figure per week on a tight schedule, Talking Luke Skywalker is up next and it also has the ability to impress. Will you be receptive however? That is the question.

Talking Luke Skywalker might not be as stunning as the Talking Stormtrooper, but it too is a marvel and very exciting release. It’s already been expressed, but to have REAL movie phrases from the Original Trilogy films programmed into these toys (and not desperate attempts of voiceover actors imitating the real actors doing the lines) is enough to make you smile. With over 15 phrases and gimmicky, yet appreciated electronics, Talking Luke Skywalker will provide hours of enjoyment for collectors of all ages. Just like the previous efforts, Talking Luke Skywalker has an excellent sculpt from head to toe. The likeness is uncanny, one of the best we have seen of actor Mark Hamill circa 1977 in a toy form. The hair is perfect, the eyes are almost there and the facial structure is a dead ringer for the actor. Some collectors have commented on the sculpts of these figures and compared them to The Black Series 6” line; not for the articulation, but for the structure. We see why collectors would feel this way as Disney has chosen talented sculptors to design these figures with styles that do mimic what Hasbro brings to their own action figures. Plenty of wrinkles, similar proportions but better approaches are what set Disney’s Talking Star Wars Figures line apart from the rest. And while this line isn’t intended to compete with any 3.75” line, it’s hard not to make general comparisons.

What blows us away with the Talking Luke Skywalker figure is the paint job. How easy would it have been for Disney to release a clean flight suit? Do you believe they gave the entire figure a complete final wash which gives it a dirty and live in appearance? Not even Hasbro gives their action figures a paint job this good. We are stunned by the artistic details added to this figure. Even the “bib” has an uneven and brushed look to it and that is only colored in white. Details like these should prove to you how much effort went into this collection of larger scaled figures. And it makes sense why they are selling so well and already exceeding expectations. The electronics are seamless with the figure. For example, the firing button for the gun looks like a pocket on Luke’s orange flight suit. And his talking features are nearly hidden in his life support chest box. Plus, he comes with a removable helmet that is in perfect proportion to the rest of his body. It isn’t oversized and it fits like a glove on his head. As you can see we’re enthralled with this release and we will believe this line will only get better with time. We’re on board now and we believe more will join in with this celebratory collection of kids’ toys. Talking Luke Skywalker should interest hardcore collectors in one form or another. From the 13 points of articulation to the uncanny likeness, this figure will meet every last expectation, if not more. Give this line a chance. If you don’t, you will miss out on some great stuff.
