Medicom Toy is genuinely innovative when it comes to their high-end adult collectibles lines. Always forging against the flow, they have created multiple unique brands that capture the essence of popular licenses while appeasing the fans of those specific licenses with cool, quirky and beautiful products. In the mid-2000s, Medicom Toy produced a line called Vinyl Collectible Dolls. It was during this time that vinyl figures became all the rage. While trendy, this style of collectible (or toy depending upon your point of view) appealed to only a niche audience, the approach of this style through the eyes of Star Wars captured the interest of many more people. High price, exclusivity and low edition sizes definitely worked against the Medicom Toy Vinyl Collectible Dolls line (denoted as VDCs here on out), but Medicom Toy was consistent with forging more and more deeply into this line releasing not only characters from the film, but the Expanded Universe too.

Released a year earlier, the Boba Fett VCD was one of the most sought after VCDs in the line’s history. Selling out quickly, Medicom Toy knew they needed to get another out to the collecting public as soon as humanly possible. We only had to wait a year, but Boba Fett (The Empire Strikes Back Ver.) was released to thunderous applause and provided a unique paint job and some new tooling that made the character specific to Episode V. (Editor’s Note: At the time, StarWarsShop.com helped make these more readily available to American collectors, but this special supply would be released almost two years later.) The VCDs essentially have very little lower body movement, but their upper bodies have multiple points of articulation. They are able to hold weapons, turn their heads and look pretty marvelous in collections. Whether realistically styled, or super-deformed, the VCDs line may have a place for you in your heart and collection.

Boba Fett (The Empire Strikes Back Ver.) falls under the “super-deformed” banner. Despite his odd proportions, the authenticity throughout his body is quite impressive. The head is large on top of a reduced body, but the head had “true” proportions and isn’t styled in an animated way like the body is. If you removed the head and placed it on an equally scaled body it would look perfectly normal. We estimate that it would be around the right size for a one-fourth scaled statue or figure if that makes sense, perhaps it would even be a little too big. That’s how large the head is. But between the gorgeous paint job, attention to detail and the awesome accessories, there is no way a fan of Boba Fett could pass on the Boba Fett (The Empire Strikes Back Ver.) VCD. From the silver paint applications to simulate wear and tear on the metal helmet to the functioning hoster and ability to hold the guns in his large hands, we find that the Boba Fett (The Empire Strikes Back Ver.) VCD is a must-have for your collection.
