AT-RT With AT-RT Driver - ROTS - Vehicles

The Republic forces use AT-RT (All-Terrain Recon Transport) vehicles for reconnaissance and ground support. Lightweight and maneuverable, they walk on long legs and are controlled by specialized clone troopers with distinctive armor.

Hasbro created a multitude of various assortment of toys for the Revenge Of The Sith line. Whether they were experimental in approach (like the Battle Arena assortment) or revisits of successful sub-lines (like the Deluxe assortment), 2005 was certainly all about variety. They also created a sub-line of smaller vehicles and they referred to it as the Battle Vehicle assortment. A bit of a misnomer, the line also contained Boga With Obi-Wan Kenobi. For lack of a better reference, it was probably more similar to 2004’s Star Wars “Saga” Ultra line. Anyway, the assortment also contained the smaller scaled vehicles from Episode III along with a rider and it was pretty much a runaway success. Collectors were definitely disappointed by the poorly articulated pack-in figures that accompanied the vehicles, but whether you were young or old collector, it was hard not to be remotely interested in this line. The release of AT-RT With AT-RT Driver was exciting because it contained a vehicle that forced us to reminisce about the Original Trilogy, as well as provide with a colorful clone that at the time of the vehicle’s release wasn’t in the line yet.

The AT-RT is very well designed. It has an electronic action feature. An on/off switch allows the AT-RT to walker via battery power. We never felt that this feature worked incredibly well, but it’s something that the kids are absolutely going to love. It looks very accurate to its brief appearance in Revenge Of The Sith and it’s nicely in proportion to the controversial pack-in figure. Hasbro gave the AT-RT beautifully painted accents on it rather dull and drab gray body, but these elements really illuminate the vehicle nicely. The “antenna” attachment on the back on the vehicle is a small disappointment. It’s made from a terribly flaccid plastic that is nearly impossible to maintain a 90 degree angle to the base of where it sits. But this smaller hiccup isn’t enough to deter us from loving this vehicle. All that’s missing are a bunch of dead Wookiees to accompany this vehicle so you can recreate the scene from Episode III. What will be a detriment for some collectors however is the pack-in figure, but we’re on the fence because we don’t think a fully articulated pack-in figure would be able to attain the same result as this minimally articulated done does. Let’s talk about it a bit more.

The AT-RT Driver pack-in figure looks astonishing on top of the AT-RT, but that’s the only way he is going to look this good. He is nearly a solid sculpt, but does come with a swivel head, two swivel shoulders and a swivel waist. The paint job is decent, but it isn’t screen accurate. The helmet isn’t decorated properly and where the figure is brown, it should really be more of a tan color. The great news here is that Hasbro has already added 2005’s ROTS AT-RT Driver (III 54) to the line and it’s super-articulated, but it still doesn’t look “as good” as this pack-in figure atop of the AT-RT. Still, we believe most hardcore collectors will be quickly replacing the pack-in figure with the super-articulated version, and that’s totally fine by us. The Battle of Kashyyyk was awesome, but it’s short time on the screen disappointed many Star Wars fans, especially since we knew about a long and terrible Wookiee battle for years now. (Thank goodness other Expanded Universe sources are developing the Battle of Kashyyyk in much greater detail now.) Anyway, the AT-RT may have not had a great deal of screen time, but it’s great fun as a toy and we get a new clone, albeit barely a true action figure by definition. The price is great too, so pick it up for that reason alone.
