While not all of the Mega Action figures are resonating with collectors, we believe the Destroyer Droid will. The line is in and of itself controversial. Collectors seem to be resistant to a new scale. But it is the action features that are really putting a bad taste in collectors’ mouths. The Mega Action line is clearly designed with kids in mind, but we wonder if Hasbro is overlooking who is actually buying these things. Perhaps these newly scaled figures should be appealing to another market instead. The good news is that the Destroyer Droid Mega Action figure is free of wonky action features, has a splendid design, has two modes that are screen accurate and has a paint job that rivals most figures in 3.75” scale. But we will describe him a whole lot more in a bit. This trial run of 6” figures, now part of the Power Of The Jedi line, were all originally planned for the Episode I line. But between the overage of product and limited shelf space, plans for these figures were canned for another time. We’re glad to finally see them released. Darth Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi are without question far from perfect, but it’s the Destroyer Droid that has our interest piqued the most. Let’s see why this may be a figure to not overlook.

The Destroyer Droid is LARGE. We mean that in a good way. It is in perfect scale to the Darth Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi action figures also part of the Mega Action line. As you know, the Destroyer Droid has two prominent modes: attack mode and rolling mode. Would you believe you can transform the Destroyer Droid into a perfect circular shape for this rolling mode? It’s astounding and looks fantastic. Not one 3.75” scaled Destroyer Droid has been able to recreate this mode. We count ourselves thankful to have an action figure (regardless of the scale) that can accomplish this action while still looking as screen accurate without any sacrifices. Even the arms fold up and tuck under so that the droid can roll along a surface to reach its destination. Hasbro also chose to neglect some of the novelty that has been presented in the 3.75” line. Gone are blast effects that attach to the arms for example. But we’re still most taken with how each limb can transpose itself flawlessly into the rolling mode while appearing like this toy has been ripped right from the film. The only think that could have perfected this toy is if Hasbro added a clear stand so that the Destroyer Droid could remain upright in rolling mode and/or the recreated a big clear shield bubble to fit around it in attack mode.

The paint job on the Destroyer Droid is phenomenal. When you have something in a larger scale, we imagine there is even more pressure to get the paint operations tighter and neater. Well, we believe Hasbro has succeeded here. The pearly paint applications are beautifully applied. The golden copper used to decorate the Destroyer Droid’s body and head is accented with silver and purple stripes, but in a blended fashion, not a hard one. Overall, we’re extremely pleased with how well this figure has been decorated. We don’t even think we could come up with some ideas for improvement. The Destroyer Droid has over 20 points of articulation, including the premium ball-jointed legs which provide the Destroyer Droid the option to completely invert them and fold them up. They literally disappear when you roll the Destroyer Droid up into a “ball”. We believe that Hasbro strength in the Mega Action line is droids. They should probably keep introducing as many droid into the line, perhaps rename it some Droid themed description, and continue to bang them out. Imagine a B1 battle droid that can fold up just like it was on the MTT. And imagine astromechs with more bells and whistles than you could possibly imagine. It seems like this could be a fruitful line indeed.
