Boba Fett - SW [S - P3] - Exclusives

More than 25 years after we first saw the Star Destroyer enter the screen at the beginning of A New Hope, Star Wars continues to both inspire and entertain. Much more than just a series of films, Star Wars is a total experience. Essential components of that experience are the toys that we grew (and continue to grow) up with and the sense of community that brings us together to discuss, debate, and share all things Star Wars.

It is with respect to the heritage of that experience that Hasbro offers this limited action figure. It was created especially for a limited series of 2003 conventions to celebrate the dedication and enthusiasm of the fan community.

It seems that the silver gravy train is taking shape. After two distinctly unique Silver Anniversary (1977-2002) collectible figures, Hasbro has decided that a series of these figures should continue on strongly. Probably the best choice for an action figure to be silvered, Boba Fett has been developed for the unofficially dubbed “Silver Saga Edition” line of collectible action figures all celebrating the 25 year landmark of one of the greatest film franchises of all time. Placed on black and silver packaging with a unique bubble and nameplate, these silver action figures aren’t the most exciting, but they’re attractive reminders to just how far we’ve come in the toy line. When it comes to Boba Fett, Hasbro utilized one of the greatest sculpts to date, albeit it’s a little too pre-posed for our tastes. Taking the Boba Fett (300th Figure) deluxe packaged action figure, they permanently affixed his weapons into the revised tooling and released what many could consider to be like a miniature trophy in their collections. It actually looks just like that, which is to say it’s interesting.

Based on 2000’s POTJ Boba Fett (300th Figure), Hasbro has tweaked this release in ways that may actually bother action figure enthusiasts. He doesn’t have a removable or articulated rangefinder now, his weapons are permanently affixed to his hands or holster, and the jetpack and rocket are unable to removed as well. As an action figure, these are terrible setbacks, but as a celebratory collectible, we couldn’t care less. Even the bicep articulation has been removed. And his shoulders can only articulate together in unison since the sawed-off blaster rifle in his hands is permanently affixed there and yokes his arms together. The rest of the articulation is the same, but we noticed how difficult it is to articulate them, especially his waist. Even the hips don’t want to pose and return to their original pose. It’s quite odd. So, with no separate accessories and minimal articulation, it appears that this silver Boba Fett is a couple notches lower quality than its predecessor. The silver soft-goods cape was a very nice touch here. It has a nice drape as well. It will be interesting to see ho far Hasbro will take these “Silver Saga Edition” figures in the future.

The paint job is pretty much exactly what you’d expect it to be. Cast in a silvery metallic plastic, it captures light beautifully and makes the figure look like it is glowing in it. There aren’t any highlights breaking up this figure brightness and sheen. We think perhaps a patina finish may have really benefitted this figure, giving it a pewter like finish. You may have noticed that Boba Fett has been approached much differently than the Darth Vader (2002 New York Toy Fair) figure and/or the R2-D2 Toys R Us exclusive Silver Anniversary (1977-2002) figures. Well, they have been approached differently. R2-D2 had a vac-metallized finish. And the Darth Vader (New York Toy Fair) figure had a similar type of finish as well, but different. Now Hasbro has decided that these figures should be cast in a plastic that imitates a vac-metallized type of appearance. The new approach works well, but ti does look differently than what we have seen in the past. Boba Fett has been officially billed as a 2003 Convention Exclusive. And it made its debut in June of 2003 at the Origins Con in Columbus Ohio. It made subsequent appearances at other conventions in 2003 as well.
