Fenn Rau was a former fighter pilot instructor who fought for the Republic during the Clone Wars. Once the Empire came to power, Rau became leader of the Protectors of Concord Dawn, an elite Mandalorian warrior group patrolling the Concord Dawn system.

Fenn Rau is purple Dengar from The Legacy Collection Comic Packs. Obviously that statement isn’t true, but we can’t help notice the resemblance in color scheme between the two figures. Go ahead; compare the figures yourself. How can you not see the similarities? Characters from the Rebels television show are entering the line in anything but a breakneck pace, and many fans of the show have been frustrated with the low volume of characters Hasbro has made in figure form. The days of 60-75 characters from a Star Wars media event are long gone. And now we’re lucky to get a couple dozen anymore. This is the collecting hand we’ve been dealt and it really doesn’t do much to engage us. It’s completely understandable why Hasbro just doesn’t have the audience it used to years ago. You can’t keep doing business like this and expect everyone to hang around when they likely won’t find the new stuff in stores anyway. The availability of the fourth wave of Rogue One figures is also somewhat controversial. We personally don’t expect to see them in stores, but there have been multiple rumors about case assortment cancellations and limited availability at placed line online retailers. We’ll have to see what happens in the next couple of months because right now everything is very gray. Wave 4 wasn’t as bad as we thought it was going to be. The figures definitely need some work with the paint operations, but overall the sculpts are right on the money and the accessories are based on screen accuracy as often as possible now. That actually makes us very, very happy.

Wookieepedia goes into great detail about Fenn Rau. They explain the obvious. He is a male Mandalorian who served as Skull Leader during the Clone Wars and, after the rise of the Galactic Empire, as the leader of the Protectors of Concord Dawn approximately three years before the Battle of Yavin. After he attacked Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren and Kanan Jarrus retaliated and ultimately captured him. After some time, he then joined forces with the Ghost Crew and eventually became part of the Rebellion. So, it makes sense why Hasbro made him a priority in the Rogue One line. Characters from the Rebellion are an important part of the current Star Wars timeline now. They each tell a significant part of the story and Disney is trying to tie it all together with new films like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and other Expanded Universe sources. The action figure itself looks pretty cool. It actually came out better than we expected. You get some sweet versatility with Fenn Rau that is simple, but poignant and we appreciate the outside thinking Hasbro applied here. Fenn Rau comes with a removable helmet. There are cords hanging down from the helmet and in the center lies a tab. This tab plugs into a slot in Fenn Rau’s chest box and stays in place very neatly. If you turn his head it pops out (as expected), but the feature is pretty darn cool for a simple figure and again, we appreciate the attention Hasbro gave the figure.

Fenn Rau also comes with two Mandalorian blasters. They also gave him functioning holsters which house them when not in use. He can also hold them rather well too. He comes with a jet backpack as well. We’re not crazy with how it attaches (with j-hooks over the shoulders) but it comes with a simple play feature that the kids will probably love. The wings of the jet backpack can be pulled out or pushed in to create different wingspan lengths. Again, it’s a simple addition here, but they didn’t have to do anything. Fenn Rau looks great with or without his gear. We love that he has these options because they give collectors versatility when it comes to displaying him. The paint operations aren’t exactly perfect, but they’re not terrible either. The lines for the most part are very clean and Hasbro has treated the figure to a nice array of colors that due the sculpt justice. The figure’s articulation is another story. Everyone would be buying this figure if it came super-articulated. There is something magical that happens to a collector when a figure is super-articulated. It makes him excited. It makes him anticipate the next one coming. But things just aren’t like that anymore. So, you really only have one choice here. Fenn Rau is a decent action figure. He isn’t ideal, but it’s the only way we’re getting this figure. It’s most likely the only time you’ll see this action figure get produced.
