Clone Commander Gree, designation 1004, led the Elite Corps of clone trooper during the Clone Wars. He saw deployments on such heated battlefronts as Kashyyyk. Though a faithful commander who carried out the Jedi's orders, Gree was ultimately loyal to the Republic.
Clone Commander Gree was a pretty big surprise announcement at 2017’s Star Wars Celebration Orlando. JTA was in attendance and were walking by the Toy R Us panel stage while the figure was being officially announced and shown. Seeing Clone Commander Gree on the large monitors for the very first time was a fantastic experience. Hasbro explained during the presentation that they had to relegate Clone Commander Gree to being a retailer exclusive for one simple reason: his complex paint operations. In all honesty, we personally don’t see what the big deal is. Some Star Wars characters are going to have simple deco and others will have more complicated deco. Can’t this be costed out in a way where characters like Clone Commander Gree can join the main line instead? Maybe not. We do know that Clone Commander Gree came out pretty well, but he isn’t perfect. We wish Hasbro would have gotten a little bit more aggressive with the deco on his helmet. We didn’t get to see this character all that much in Episode III, and when we did they were mostly upper body shots. In the film his helmet has a lot of battle-damage. The figure however is quite clean and it doesn’t look right compared to the battle-damage given below the neck. Clone Commander Gree isn’t by any means a “bad” figure, but the higher MSRP and store exclusivity seems they should have warranted a more thoroughly decorated figure. That’s our two cents on that.
Clone Commander Gree has been approached very smartly. Taking the Phase II Clone Trooper from 2015's TBS [P3] Phase I Clone Trooper Commander/Phase II Clone Trooper/Imperial Stormtrooper/First Order Stormtrooper Officer Amazon exclusive four-pack, Hasbro has given Clone Commander Gree an all-new torso (because of his suspenders and antenna) and all-new left thigh (because of his tactical thigh holster). The attention to detail here is tremendously appreciated and we’re glad Hasbro didn’t take any shortcuts with respect to these very unique physical differences that exist when compared to the other infantry clone troopers in the line. The sculpt is fantastic. And we’re thrilled to report that the articulation on Clone Commander Gree is extremely tight, much more than many of their recent figures. Gree holds the positions you pose him in and can hold them extremely well. He can hold the included blasters well (with one or both hands) and the articulation system for the most part has been designed in favor with that the character is supposed to do. Again, Clone Commander Gree provides a wealth of high quality. We’re just not crazy about the portrait. But the drco isn’t the only problem with have with the phase II bucket. We think something might be inherently wrong with it design, albeit not terribly noticeable to most collectors.
Take some time to analyze the helmet. There is something inexplicably off with its sculpt. The phase II bucket in nothing new in The Black Series [Phase III] 6” line as we have received plenty of characters with this design now. But look at Clone Commander Gree from sideview (either left or right side) and notice how the black outlining line is going up instead of flush/straight across horizontally (180 degrees). This perspective line is really throwing something off on how accurate this is to the character we see in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. It seems more off-putting on Clone Commander Gree than the plain infantry clones probably due to his complex paint operations. In fact, that has to be the reason. The mostly white helmets don’t exaggerate this inaccuracy hardly at all. With Clone Commander Gree it’s certainly more obvious. Even with this being said, Clone Commander Gree is a very fun action figure and will surely be braced by fans of the 6” line. They have a lot to enjoy with Clone Commander Gree. From the four included accessories (the two guns, the macrobinoculars and the removable antenna) to the great articulation and beautiful paint operations, Clone Commander Gree will be a highlight of the 2017 The Black Series 6” line. Toys R Us got a great exclusive here. Let’s hope they make him widely available.
