"Fugitive" was another standout episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars that helped build both mythology and characters. The evidence that Fives and AZI-3 discovered was going to be sent to Coruscant while Fives had one more test to pass. On his way out Fives saw that Nala Se had switched out the brief case containing the inhibitor chip that was removed from Tup. While being escorted by a group of clone troopers, Fives ran into AZI-3 who informed him both of their minds were going to be wiped. This was clearly a play by Nala Se to cover her tracks but Fives attacked the clones escorting him and escaped with AZI-3. It was great to see Fives in action demonstrating his superior combat skills considering he is an ARC trooper. Fives and AZI-3 then retrieved the inhibitor chip and stole a Kaminoan flight pod. Fives once again demonstrated his quick thinking by only using the pod as a distraction so he and AZI-3 could continue to investigate the chip. Plus we got to see Fives ride AZI-3 like a scooter, so that was fun.

Following Fives’ escape, Nala Se contacted Tyranus to inform him of what had happened. Tyranus was concerned that a clone could go rogue like that and questioned Nala Se's programming of the clones. Nala Se said that serving alongside the Jedi has inspired unexpected individuality and creativity in the clones. I really liked the fact that this point was brought up. It is one of the most important plot points in the series and has been demonstrated throughout the show. Captain Rex and Fives are more independent because they have served with Anakin, but Commander Cody is more by the book because of his service with Obi-Wan. The clones’ relationship with their Jedi Generals is one of the most interesting aspects of this era and makes the events of Revenge of the Sith all the more tragic.

Fives, now disguised as a normal clone trooper, and AZI-3 continued their research in the Kamino archives. They discovered that the chip was implanted in Tup and it wasn't present in the Jango Fett genome. I know it just a still image in a medical file, but it was great to see Jango Fett again. Knowing full well he could die, Fives wanted AZI-3 to remove the chip from his brain. AZI-3 informed Fives that the chip from his brain was in perfect condition while Tup's clearly malfunctioned. I have to say, I really enjoyed the paring of Fives and AZI-3. AZI-3 easily could've been over the top or silly but instead he provided some genuinely good humor while highlighting Fives' individuality. After discovering that the tumor from Tup's head was an organic chip that was also in Fives' head, he and AZI-3 went to see in if they were present in any of the clone embryos. They discovered that the chip was implanted in all clones at a very early age. Nala Se discovered them and Fives held her and gunpoint until Shaak Ti arrived. Fives showed her the evidence and Shaak Ti decided to let Fives go to Coruscant to plead his case to the Chancellor. While Shaak Ti allowed Fives to bring the evidence to Coruscant, she has spent much of the story arc accepting what the Kaminoans have said at face value despite the evidence Fives gathered. In these episodes Shaak Ti seemed remarkably unconcerned and passive about Fives’ allegations. I’ve always liked Shaak Ti but this story arc hasn’t portrayed her in the best light. The episode ended with a great moment between Fives and AZI-3 that highlighted why they make such a great team. "Fugitive" allowed us to delve deeper into Order 66 and put the great dynamic between Fives and AZI-3 front and center.

What Worked

• The gradual Order 66 reveals
• Great mixture of character moments, mythology, and action

What Didn’t Work

• Shaak Ti largely unconcerned by Fives’ allegations
