Well, the best episode so far in the Forces Of Destiny animated shorts has translated into the best toys of the Forces Of Destiny doll collection by Hasbro. How is that for a quick summation? We love the Princess Leia Organa & Wicket The Ewok (Endor Adventure) set but that probably has to do a lot with our affection for Princess Leia, Ewoks and Episode VI. We will TRY to be unbiased here but it will prove difficult. The Forces Of Destiny figures are really caricatured takes on the characters we see in these animated shorts. Hasbro has then assembled this “caricaturization” into a seamless line where each girl looks similar in approach to one another, yet are able to maintain their uniqueness through their very special features, hairstyles and outfits. Princess Leia Organa & Wicket The Ewok (Endor Adventure) brings two new characters to the lineup: Princess Leia Organa in her combat poncho gear and Wicket The Ewok (do we really need “The Ewok”?) who also comes with some cool gear of his own. The set pairs these two characters in a screen accurate way for the most part and offers some extras thanks to the format of the Adventure Figures assortment. Think of this phase of the Forces Of Destiny line as a deluxe version of the Figures & Friends assortment, which includes an extra outfit or significant accessory to justify the heightened MSRP for it. We think an extra outfit doesn’t warrant another $10, but we won’t focus on that negative as there is too much to appreciate beyond that.
Princess Leia Organa truly looks fantastic. Anyone who collected the vintage Kenner Return of The Jedi line knows the ins and outs of this version of Leia. Hasbro graciously tooled a beautiful version of the general and her face and hair totally meet our expectations. Once again, the hair is “locked in place” and won’t come unraveled when touched, adding or removing head gear (like helmets or head coverings) or when clothing is changed. Whatever hairspray of lacquer Hasbro has utilized here should be commended because there is no film and the hair looks completely natural. She comes with a ton of great accessories that look great and are functional with the figure. Princess Leia Organa strips down to almost complete bareness when you remove her “combat poncho” gear, but Hasbro has respectfully tooled a tube top and a pair of panties for modesty. However, those details have not been painted and are flesh-colored so the princess does look naked despite those efforts. The need for Princes Leia Organa to appear “naked” is all because of the extra “Ewok celebration” gown she has been given (as well as a pair of sandals). Both outfits look fantastic on her, but we have to be honest and say that we truly wished Hasbro added another head sculpt in this set (which WOULD justify the extra $10 price point) that had her hair down and ornamented with twine while wearing the Ewok gown just like we saw in Return Of The Jedi AS WELL AS the Forces Of Destiny animated short. We think this was a huge missed opportunity and something Hasbro should be afraid to do.
Perhaps the best thing in the Princess Leia Organa & Wicket The Ewok (Endor Adventure) is Wicket The Ewok himself. Man, this thing couldn’t be more adorable. In a surprising move, Hasbro has given Wicket The Ewok a flocked fur and it is divine. It perfectly captures the spirit of the character and the sculpt totally reminds us of his character in the Ewoks cartoon series. It’s evident that there was some inspiration from that old cartoon when designing this figure. Heck, it’s even evident in the animated series too. He also comes with a decent amount of articulation which includes a swivel head (but it’s significantly inhibited), two swivel shoulders and two swivel hips. He comes with an impressive amount of accessories including his spear, bow and an arrow. His cowl is also removable just like how most Ewok figures are approached. Although definitely too short when compared to Princess Leia Organa (this seems to be a theme in the Forces Of Destiny doll line), they interact beautifully between each other and we don’t think a more special pairing of two characters for a girls’ line can be done. The Princess Leia Organa & Wicket The Ewok (Endor Adventure) is a total hit for us. We hope the significantly higher MSRP of the Adventure Figures don’t deter shoppers from picking them up. Hasbro does need to consider adding a little more value in these sets, but this is a nice start and we look forward to seeing what they will do with the line. There are some other great characters ahead in this line. Some will sell just because of who they are, but others should sell based on what’s included. This set is an example of the latter.
