Wait a minute. Does this Comic Packs set contain two Star Wars action figures or two based on characters from The Chronicles Of Narnia instead? If it weren’t for the lightsabers in their hands, we would have to reconsider this for a moment or two. Because this Comic Packs contains two action figures that really favor the look of medieval times in more ways than one. We aren’t entirely sure what to think of this inspiration, but it appears that it is something both Lucas and fans liked. While these figures have a historical familiarity to them, we still think both are very cool and they have been designed very well. In fact, one of the figures has a neat new feature to keep soft-goods capes in place (ingenious is you ask us). The Ulic Qel-Droma/Exar Kun Comic Packs set does offer collectors two quality action figures for sure, but we aren’t entirely sure how accurate their costumes are to their appearances in the comics. But this doesn’t mean that they don’t look good. Now, our research has been limited to Wookieepedia, so we could be off here, but while we notice similar costumes, the colors are quite different. We aren’t too familiar with the Tales Of The Jedi series either, so we may not be the most qualified to offer our opinions here. We will however tell you what we do know. After all, this is just our take on this Comic Packs set.
Ulic Qel-Droma (yeah, we can barely pronounce his name either) is a super-articulated action figure. Looking like a hybrid of some Shadows Of The Empire character and a medieval warrior, he looks pretty cool. His gray shirt and brown pants are accented with the respective colors on the forearms and lower legs. Nearly looking like he has barbed wire wrapped around these parts, it is a unique take on a Jedi warrior. He has a torn red tunic which has a quite bizarre drape and it is cast in plastic – no soft-goods here unfortunately. But he has a great head sculpt that we think doesn’t favor any previously released Star Wars figure to date. That impresses us. He holds his own being unique and we believe that at this point it is quite difficult for Hasbro to make something look brand new. His right hand holds his lightsaber very well, but don’t ask for the same response from his left arm. It was clearly designed for some other accessory. By default, this figure falls under the category of boring because he really doesn’t dazzle us as an action figure. If you love this character, then we apologize, but while he is expertly crafted, we just don’t think he is all that intriguing. Still, it isn’t too often that we get action figures based on the Tales Of The Jedi series, so we expect fans of these comics will be very thankful.
Exar Kun on the other hand is quite a masterpiece. Having a striking resemblance to the Highlander, he too is super-articulated and sports an all-new sculpt. Exar Kun really favors the look of a medieval knight especially his “not really-chainmail“ skirt. He is accented with gold details on his belt and cape tie. And his cape is designed in a way that seems to be a first for Star Wars figures. Complete with spaulders, they plug into the figures back (and through a hole in the soft-goods cape) to keep it in place. The effect is very realistic and it is a fine execution of plastic and soft-goods interacting with very positive results. We must comment that the cape sort of has a mind of its own and the drape is not perfect. The cape wants to stay wide open and if you try to bring it in closer to the figure, it swings back out again. But we really like Exar Kun and he is definitely the highlight of this set. He comes with two lightsabers that attach at the hilts, so you have multiple lightsaber posing options. The lightsabers have been designed well and fit like a glove together. We think the Comic Packs are going out with a bang and while is this isn’t the best one we have ever seen, there is no denying that it is worthy of your consideration. These figures are all-new and designed and painted very well. Their likenesses are ot exact, but they are still done very well. Tales Of The Jedi fans will be very happy to pick up this set.
