The clone leader of the 501st Legion, Clone Captain Rex (CT-7567) took orders from Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano in his service to the Republic during the Clone Wars. Like most clones for the Republic, he was trained to be a soldier from birth; however, Rex took his responsibility personally, always completing his missions and considering his military service to be a great honor. Fond of using two DC-17 hand blasters at the same time, Rex customized his armor with distinctive blue markings, representative of the 501st Legion. As captain, Rex possessed a unique ability to lead, as he was not only strong-willed, but a freethinker with the ability to improvise - something his fellow clones often lacked. Though Rex's loyalty to the Republic and his Jedi generals was absolute, the dedicated veteran soldier found himself plagued by doubts as the Clone Wars claimed more lives and brought ruin to more worlds.
On October 8, 2014 JTA revealed a rumor straight out of Hasbro’s mouth that the collecting community could expect a Clone Captain Rex in The Black Series 6” line. It’s hard to believe that it has taken almost three years to the day for Hasbro to finally get that character out in 6” scale. Making its first appearance as a 2017 HASCON exclusive, Clone Captain Rex is officially a member of The Black Series [Phase III] exclusive program with a basic release version coming in Spring 2018 with updated paint operations. How is that for luck? Actually, the 2018 release will feature the new and exciting “photo realistic” face technology and will undoubtedly look better than the HASCON version, not that the HASCON version is too shabby itself. Despite the long three-year wait, Clone Captain Rex has turned out remarkably well. We’re thrilled with the paint operations, the attention to detail, the realistic interpretation of the face sculpt, and the smart reuse of existing parts to make an incredibly “screen accurate” of everyone’s favorite clone captain from the beloved The Clone Wars television show. Hasbro really didn’t hold back on this figure as they included all of his major weapons, a removable (and articulated helmet) and a permanent pauldron (so that it stays in place with movement) to show his elite ranking as a captain. With awesome proportions and wonderfully premium soft-goods for the kama to create optimal movement, Clone Captain Rex is sure to be a hit with all 6” collectors.
If you attended HASCON you know how long the lines were every day in the morning to attain this figure. On Friday, for about 15 minutes, each person in line was limited to four Clone Captain Rex figures. That maximum was then lowered to two figures for the duration of the event. If you were fortunate enough to get in the line that early then we’re glad you were able to help your friends get this great figure, and not flip them on eBay. Right? Clone Captain Rex was truly a special HASCON exclusive release. Hasbro also sold their three popular San Diego Comic Con exclusives at the Hasbro Toy Shop booth too, but Clone Captain Rex made its debut for the HASCON event and was the hit of the weekend. In beautiful blue embossed and die-cut packaging, Clone Captain Rex comes in a box about the size of a standard The Black Series [Phase III] 6” figure that is just a little longer in height and tad thicker in width. His bio is printed in white font on the side of the box and like all other The Black Series 6” exclusives, no sequence number has been given to this release. We’re still not sure if this version of Clone Captain Rex comes with any exclusive accessories, but we’re inclined to believe that this is not the case because all of them are his most basic and essential weapons. An exclusive accessory or accessories would be a neat extra feature to include here, but unless Hasbro is going to think outside of the box we don’t think they would go that route for this character. We are really interested to see how or if this figure differs from the basic release.
Based on 2014’s TBS [P1] Clone Trooper (#14) figure, Clone Captain Rex comes with an amazing 30 points of articulation across 19 points of articulation. The inclusion of swivel biceps and hips in addition to double hinge-jointed elbows and knees gives Clone Captain Rex a significant advantage in flexibility and movement over so many other figures in The Black Series 6” line. We really wish that Hasbro was this generous with other figures in this line with these hyper-articulated bodies. Although Hasbro took most of the 2014 TBS [P1] Clone Trooper (#14) figure, they tooled an all-new torso. It’s almost identical to the original figure’ torso, but a quick side by side comparison will show you clearly that they differ. Hasbro has glued a permanent pauldron to the new torso. We wish they didn’t do this, but it holds the pauldron perfectly in place without it sliding around or moving when you don’t want it to move. It really makes for a clean action figure that is neat and tidy and not unkempt. Hasbro also tooled a new belt/holster combination piece which houses his two DC-17 blaster pistols when not in use. They fit perfectly in their holsters. The belt also fits tightly around his waist so it doesn’t flop all over the place when you try to pose him. And the soft-good kama is just wonderful. We love that Hasbro did this for this figure. There is so much to be happy about with Clone Captain Rex. If you’re a fan of the 501st Legion or just an overall fan of The Clone Wars, this figure is for you. He has a great clone likeness and has bene beautifully painted. Oh, and he retails for $24.99 if you’re interested too.
Status: Clone Captain Rex is a retool and subsequent repaint of 2014's TBS [P1] Clone Trooper (#14) figure. This time the figure comes with an all-new torso including a glued-down pauldron in addition to a new belt/holster combination piece. The figure also has been given an all-new portrait with removable articulated helmet. Finally, Clone Captain Rex has been completely repainted.
