A legendary Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi was a noble man and gifted in the ways of the Force. He trained Anakin Skywalker, served as a general in the Republic Army during the Clone Wars, and guided Luke Skywalker as a mentor.

Hasbro has made the most out of their The Black Series [Phase III] Obi-Wan Kenobi sculpt, haven’t they? Jedi Temple Archives broke the news of this figure’s impending release, although Hasbro kept very quiet about officially announcing him because he was to be released as a convention exclusive first. And the exclusive release of this figure is exactly what happened. Starting off officially as a San Diego Comic Con exclusive along with some special accessories, Obi-Wan Kenobi then got released as 2016’s TBS [P3] Obi-Wan Kenobi (32) figure. in the 6” mainline only to be quickly repacked into The Black Series [Star Wars 40] line in vintage Kenner inspired packaging. Jedi Temple Archives then came across a tidbit of new information in January 2017. The original tooling of Obi-Wan Kenobi was utilized to create a “Force Spirit” version of Obi-Wan Kenobi. We saw him in this fashion in both Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back as well as Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi. It had been reserved as a Walgreens exclusive. And that friends, has come to pass. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Force Spirit) comes to collectors in an exclusively packaged The Black Series [Phase III] box that is blue in color instead of red. Even the figure’s backing card has also been changed to blue, and it’s quite a sight to behold. What’s more, Hasbro approached Obi-Wan Kenobi (Force Spirit) in the same manner as 2007’s TAC Anakin Skywalker’s Spirit (30 45) 3.75” figure, which is why this version of Obi-Wan Kenobi has turned out so well.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Force Spirit) is mostly translucent from the waist down, but he also has transparent components in the plastic in his upper body as well. Hasbro has utilized a very clever paint scheme here which comes across as pearly in its effects. You know how a puddle of oil looks on the pavement from a car? Well, that’s pretty much the effect that you see when you look at how the deco was applied on Obi-Wan Kenobi (Force Spirit). He looks ghostly for sure, and thanks to expert paint operations, Hasbro hasn’t sacrificed any part of his likeness at all. This really looks like Obi-Wan Kenobi, but just in a different light. The only accessory that this figure comes with is a purple sheer soft-goods robe. It’s definitely see-through but helps to add some texture to Obi-Wan Kenobi (Force Spirit)’s sculpt. It’s easily removable and gives Obi-Wan Kenobi (Force Spirit) another type of appearance. The figure looks great with or without this new soft-goods robe. Hasbro nailed the details of his costume, worked in a lot of texture. The figure has a great silhouette and picks up any light that comes its way, creating a neat glowing effect. Hasbro worked in an incredible amount of articulation that is functional and useful. There is no lightsaber accessory packed in with this figure, but it’s really not needed anyhow. As with most robed figures, Hasbro added slits all the way on the sides of the legs to allow for a full range of movement.

As an exclusive figure, it’s novelty is really the selling point here. The unique cast of the translucent plastic, the blue colored packaging, and its Walgreens exclusivity are all working together to make Obi-Wan Kenobi (Force Spirit) a truly special release. And with a set MSRP of $19.99, it’s not out of the range of acceptable pricing. This alone will keep collectors happy. Collectors everywhere are raving about how well this figure turned out and how much he looks like a real ghost. We think Hasbro did a great job too, but we’ve seen this approach a decade again in the 30 (77-07) line, so this is really nothing new for us at this point. One of the most popular characters from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, it’s nice to see him finally represented as he appeared throughout the rest of the Original Trilogy. And thanks to the soft-goods robe, we’re able to get him in both iterations as he appeared as a Force Spirit in Episode V and Episode VI. Depending on Obi-Wan Kenobi (Force Spirit)’s success as a Walgreen exclusive, Hasbro has MANY options open to them to make other “Force Spirit” figures and/or hologram figures as future store exclusives. But hopefully they won’t go overboard and keep it special for periodic releases only. We admit that Obi-Wan Kenobi (Force Spirit) stands out as an interesting figure. It’s not great, but it definitely is an interesting release.
