As of the Star Wars [Solo] line look launch, it’s impossible to get a basic carded 3.75” Han Solo figure anywhere, but you can get it singly in every other scale. The Black Series [Phase III] Han Solo (62) figure was a hit, although the excitement for the figure has fizzled a bit shortly after its release. But now Hasbro released the 12-Inch Figure version of Han Solo and it's about as average as any other figure based on this character. The 12-Inch Figures line cherry picks the most popular and common characters from the Star Wars film at hand. While they tend to make every character in every scale (in the same outfit no less), they also throw in a couple of curveballs. For the Star Wars [Solo] line look, the curveball is the Imperial Patrol Trooper. Han Solo looks about as average as any figure in the 12-Inch Figures line. Hasbro is reluctant to break new ground in this format. Ball-socket or ball-jointed articulation would be a godsend here, but they’re comfortable with keeping this status quo instead. As expected, Han Solo breaks no new ground at all. He is just more of the same.
Han Solo doesn’t have a wonderful likeness to Alden Ehrenreich. Interestingly, the figure does look like a believable younger version of Han Solo. Interesting, yes? The figure appears to be based on his main outfit throughout the film (judging by the trailers) and comes with a light brown jacket, blue pants and few extra details that are strikingly “Han Solo” in nature. The paint operations are neat and cleanly applied. There isn’t any bleeding of deco anywhere on the figure. Aside from a few blotches on our sample, the figure looks very nice. His light-colored eyes and dark brown hair give the strong resemblance to actor Harrison Ford. And his tall and lean athletic frame only help reinforce this. His boots are gleaming, and details like his belt and holster are not only decorative but functional as well. You can holster his blaster pistol as needed thanks to the pliable and rubbery holster. It’s a great option to have in a line that is as simple as the 12-Inch Figure line is. Han Solo is truly a nice action figure. We wish he were available as a basic figure in the 3.75” line, however.
Han Solo comes with seven points of articulation. These points include a ball-socket head, two swivel shoulders, two swivel wrists and two swivel hips. This is standard for most 12-Inch Figures. The wrist articulation is great for posing the figures with weapons in hand, but the swivel hips and shoulders prevent any real meaningful movement. Ultimately the articulation on this figure is wasted. Still, we have received feedback that these figures serve a purpose with certain types of young collectors, especially those with developmental disorders or reduced motor skills. The bottom line here is that Hasbro’s 12-Inch Figures serve a purpose. Han Solo looks great posed with the other figures in the first wave. We believe that Hasbro hasn’t mastered the scale perfectly. For example, Qi’ra (Corellia) and Han Solo appear too similar in height. Regardless, these figures pair up nicely with each other. Han Solo may not score any points with those who love articulation, but we have to give credit where credit is due, so because of that we have to concede Han Solo is a decent figure.
