Chewbacca - TBS [P3] - Six Inch Figures (Exclusive)

A mighty Wookiee nearly two centuries old, Chewbacca has fallen upon hard times during this age of the expanding Empire.

Well this was a bit unexpected. The TARGET exclusive The Black Series [Phase III] Chewbacca (based on his appearance from Solo: A Star Wars Story) is the best-looking 6” figure from the new movie so far. Not only did Hasbro improve upon the sculpt of a Wookiee dramatically, but additional aesthetic upgrades have also tuned this rather bland figure into something exciting and attractive. Hasbro took the limbs from 2014’s TBS [P2] Chewbacca (#04) figure, tooled a new portrait and torso and assembled one of the greatest Chewbacca figures we have seen Hasbro produce to date. With a slightly windblown look to his fur, Chewbacca is very reminiscent of 2008’s TLC Chewbacca (BD 3) figure (in 3.75” super-articulated scale). It also gives him a strong tie to his Return Of The Jedi appearance. While we don’t know much about Chewbacca’s role in Solo: A Star Wars Story, we do know he battles the “bad guys” in a cold-weather environment called Vandor, hence the blowing fur and goggles. Hasbro pushed the envelope on this Chewbacca figure, all to satisfying results. And if you’ve been collecting the 6” figures for a while, you’re going to see an obvious attempt of Hasbro trying to elevate the quality of this figure. Yes, it’s a combination of old and new parts, but you’re going to be impressed with this release, especially the accessories.

Let us reiterate. Chewbacca has a stunning new head sculpt and an all-new torso. The torso is less layered this time around and comes with less articulation. Interestingly, we get better movement on the figure this time around because Hasbro has revisited how they’ve applied the joints. The swivel joint in the upper torso has been eliminated. In its place is a superior ball-jointed point of articulation. And then no other articulation exists until you get to the hips Because of the higher ball-jointed torso articulation, you get a range of movement that is ideal. In this case, less is more. The new approach on the torso not only helps with the figure’s posturing, but it also allows for a contour that doesn’t interfere with the aesthetics of the figure. It possesses a very smooth look now. The color of the fur feels off to us, but it isn’t glaring enough to be of any concern. Hasbro ensured that the new torso mimics the previous version’s, but there are many differences to tell them apart. For example, Chewbacca has beveling in the fur where the new bandolier sits, so it hangs close to the body. We love this approach because it prevents unnecessary movement by keeping the bandolier in place, and it helps create a screen-accurate appearance for the character.

Chewbacca comes with some of the coolest accessories we have ever seen in The Black Series 6” line. The new blaster rifle accessory takes the cake. The detail in this accessory is stunning. Chewbacca can hold it with both hands. It is a bit difficult to get both ends of the gun into his hands, but it is possible with a little bit of patience. The gun has many features on it. There is a brown handle hanging perpendicular from the length of the blaster rifle. It is brown in color and easy to place in his support hand. You can also place his hand farther down the barrel of the gun on the forestock. Chewy’s new blaster is a pump-action type of weapon, and Hasbro ensured that they articulated this feature on it to make it as realistic as possible. The double barrels and their muzzles are highly-detailed and capture the screen accuracy of the firearm beautifully. We also love the goggles accessory. Would you believe that Hasbro has added an elastic band to the goggles so that it fits as closely as possible to Chewbacca’s head? Admittedly, Chewbacca looks awesome while wearing them. We cannot wait to see the scene in Solo: A Star Wars Story where Chewbacca utilizes both of these accessories. It’s going to be an exciting scene for sure!
