Burly, pig-like brutes who favored axes and other primitive weapons, Gamorreans were often used as muscle by Hutts and other underworld kingpins. Jabba the Hutt employed a gang of intimidating Gamorreans to guard his palace on Tatooine.

There is some indescribable wow that fills Star Wars collectors when Hasbro releases the latest Gamorrean Guard action figure. If you were one of the few lucky collectors actively collecting The Vintage Collection in 2010, you no doubt recall the ecstasy the 3.75” super-articulated Gamorrean Guard brought to collectors everywhere. Most of us couldn’t get enough of them. A great army builder, a fantastic looking alien (that has as much real-world believability as it does fictional believability), and part of Jabba’s retinue on Tatooine from the best Star Wars film ever all describe the Gamorrean Guard. This character will forever be an indelible part of Star Wars fandom. We’re happy to see a toy company like Hasbro devote so much time and energy to keep them coming, especially when they make them look this incredible. After a long time waiting, the glamorous Gamorrean Guard from The Black Series [Phase III] line is here; collectors are already rejoicing. The figure is eerily similar to The Vintage Collection Gamorrean Guard (VC21) figure in that it’s not 100% perfection, but you’re not going to care. Trust us. You’re not going to care about its issues or imperfections. Despite whatever flaws you see, the Gamorrean Guard hits all of the sweet spots you’d expect from a premium Star Wars collectible. The paint operations are generally excellent, although he has a weird brown stripe going up his snout. And thanks to the larger size, Hasbro made a figure where fine details like premium soft-goods are appreciated at a greater level. The Black Series [Phase III] Gamorrean Guard 6” figure is going to be a hot commodity this year. If you see it, you may not be able to secure it.

The Gamorrean Guard has a fantastic sculpt. He’s portly, incredibly strong-looking and possesses a color palette that is almost exact to the onscreen character but just needs a few spots of tweaking before we’d so far as to say he’s perfect. Hasbro tooled an incredible amount of articulation into the Gamorrean Guard. He comes with 26 points of articulation, although not all of the points are completely user-friendly. For reasons unknown, the Gamorrean Guard comes with a hinge-jointed lower jaw. This of course is a nice novelty type of articulation point, but it is unnecessary here. Just like the Admiral Ackbar figure before him, the combination of a ball-socket head with a hinge-jointed jaw severely inhibits the head movement. So, we would have preferred a figure where you can turn his head left, right, up and down without any inhibition, but that’s not possible here much at all. You get a little leeway for left, and right head turns and a jaw that opens very wide. That’s it. You have to rely on the ball-jointed torso to turn his head, and as you can imagine, this is a big disappointment. There is an incredible amount of detail etched into the Gamorrean Guard. From the armor to the bandolier to the helmet on his head, this is an artful action figure release. The most stringent collectors are going to find soft spots in their hearts for this gorgeous action figure. Hasbro should be proud of how much work they put into the sculpt. It rare for all new tooling to go towards retailer exclusives. And we think the Gamorrean Guard needs widespread availability. Hopefully, TARGET took enough to meet the demand this figure will instantly create.

The helmet is NOT removable and that was a surprise for us. But the absence of this accessory’s “removability” is a good thing. It stays in place as required and helps when displaying him in your collection. (It is a separately sculpted piece to clear things up.) His “groin area” is a bit hollow. We know that sounds strange, but you’ll have to see it for yourself in order to understand what we mean here. When you pose the figure, this section of this figure is thin and collapses because of pressure. It feels a tad cheap, honestly. The soft-goods skirt is silky and luxurious. It’s an incredible faux fur fabric that they’ve utilized here. It has an accurate shape a decent drape which looks a great deal like the costume from the film. You’re going to love it too. As much as we will probably pick at the facial paint operations on this figure, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that Hasbro generally did a good job decorating him throughout. Hasbro did an excellent job on the fine paint details on the figure face. Remember, at the moment they cannot utilize “photorealistic” technology on a character like this as previously explained. There are imperfections here and there as well as a few off-color choices, but overall the figure look impressive. The Gamorrean Guard comes with three weapons: an ax, a hatchet, and a force pike. All interact with the figure perfectly. The weapons are stunningly sculpted and wonderfully painted. They are required additions to this character, and it was generous of Hasbro to include three with this figure. A TARGET exclusive, last we heard this figure retails for $29.99 each. But we feel it’s worth the price.
