General Madine - ROTJ - Basic

General Madine

Detailed Visual Analysis

General Madine

General Analysis

Although I thoroughly enjoyed his tactical speech for the plan of attack against the Galactic Empire in RETURN OF THE JEDI, I didn’t know what to do with him when I received him as an action figure for Christmas in 1983. It’s not like I had too many other characters to interact with him. And Kenner didn’t make a Home One playset either. So, although a speaking character of relevance in Episode VI, General Madine was more of an obligatory action figure than a necessary one. The gray-haired action figure didn’t look all that much like the onscreen character. General Crix Madine in the film seemed a little younger than his action figure counterpart. Kenner copied his costume accurately, and his signature baton, while a bit big, was accurate too. If you didn’t have Admiral Ackbar or a Rebel Commando or any other character present on the Home One with him, General Madine makes very little sense for the basic figure line. But as adult collectors, we’re glad that Kenner took a chance on him in 1983, because we’ve only had one modern update of the character from Hasbro (in 2004), and the sculpt is obsolete now. It’s time to see General Madine promoted to a definitive status once and for all!
