Biker Scout

General Analysis

They’re Imperial Stormtroopers, but for forest terrain instead! Who doesn’t remember the first time seeing the speeder bike chase in RETURN OF THE JEDI? It was the most exhilarating and thrilling sequence of the film in the entire Star Wars saga. And what made it so visceral was its believability. With familiar, yet dangerous, obstructions (like large tree trunks) and gorgeous foliage, Endor was familiar to us in more ways than one. And traveling at high speeds throughout it on a hovering motorcycle created a dash of realism that entrenched us in precariousness during these exciting scenes from the finale of the Original Trilogy. The Biker Scout was on Kenner’s short list. And he made up part of the first 17 figures to support Episode VI. An army builder in the most real sense, my brother and I didn’t accrue more than one in our shared collection for reasons unknown. It was fine. It worked out. Before we had a concrete patio poured outside our kitchen's French doors, we had a brick one. The corners began to crumble because of wear and tear. My brother thought it would be fun to have Star Wars figures help aid in the crumbling of the brick patio. Throughout the day, my brother accrued a large pile of brick remains. When my dad arrived home from work, he saw what my brother did to our patio and became furious. In anger, he flung a couple of the Star Wars figures my brother was playing with as hard as he could, and when they hit the ground, Biker Scout’s head rolled. He broke it! My mother “fixed” him by permanently Krazy Glue-ing the head to the figure’s body, but it was never the same again. It was a lesson learned I suppose.
