Disney Store is proud to introduce the Star Wars Toybox range of action figures, bringing adventures to life.

Ah, the Star Wars Toybox line. You either love it or hate it. And if you hate it, you don’t understand what makes the line so special. Inspired by the popular but now defunct Disney Infinity game, Star Wars Toybox brings a unique and distinct animated format to the Star Wars brand, in glorious five-inch scale. Disney erroneously started off the line with three characters based on The Force Awakens, but then they smartly shifted gears and have ever since produced figures based on the Original Trilogy making collectors of this line very, very happy Star Wars fans. Now after quite a few Original Trilogy basic figures releases, the Disney Star Wars Toybox line has now headed in the direction of vehicles. The first release is the TIE Fighter And Pilot Set. You should know right away that the vehicles and completely out of scale next to the figures. This is intentional to help redirect the animated style of the line. The set is very nice, plus fans get an exclusive figure: the TIE Fighter Pilot which is also nicely tooled and decorated. Let’s take a closer look.

We’re fans of the Star Wars Toybox vehicle sub-line already, but we have to comment on some of the features. Disney added electronics, and we’re fans of this. The TIE Fighter makes noises and sound effect directly from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and it accents the toy very nicely. However, we’re not thrilled about the play feature, even if at first you think it sounds like a fun thing added here. Attached to the vehicle is a handle. And when you press it in the vehicle spins in circles to help recreate it flying through space or in danger of crashing. It’s a novelty feature at best. But the handle is obtrusive and aesthetically displeasing to the inherent design of the vehicle. Also, many collectors won’t like the fact that the figure doesn’t fit into the cockpit of the vehicle. Again, this is something novel and intended to emphasize that this line is an exaggeration of the Star Wars universe. But the Star Wars Toybox line it is artful and the products in it, for us, are a success. The TIE Fighter is colored in a light gray-blue and fires two green projectiles for additional play value.

The included Pilot is another great figure in the Star Wars Toybox line. Like most of the figures in this format, the Pilot comes with an astounding 27 points of articulation across 14 areas. The Pilot comes with a shiny helmet and shiny chest armor. And he’s been given a strong animated look that mimics the style taken with other human characters in the line. In other words, the Pilot looks like he’s a seamless part of the line. Disappointingly, the Pilot comes without any weapons, and we find this very irritating. How hard would it have been for Disney to include an E-11 blaster? The Pilot comes with a beautiful, albeit simple, paint job. The whites and blues used to give the action figure detail are applied with precision and beauty. And most of the figure’s articulation is functional and allows for a wide range of movement. We’re excited to see what will be next in the Star Wars Toybox line on a grander scale. We know the Millennium Falcon in part of the line, but are we far off from receiving a Landspeeder, or an X-wing Fighter? We’d like to see all of those vehicles one day, but we’re more interested in Disney tackling some aliens first.
