Father of LUKE SKYWALKER and PRINCESS LEIA. One-time JEDI KNIGHT and pupil of BEN KENOBI.
Although I had no inkling that new STAR WARS action figures were coming in the form of THE POWER OF THE FORCE line, I did know that SOME new figures were coming thank to a mail-away offer for ANAKIN SKYWALKER that began showing up the figures from the RETURN OF THE JEDI line. I, like many other STAR WARS fans, gathered up my UPCs to mail-away for Luke Skywalker’s father. As a kid, I didn’t think for a moment that this represented the “Jedi Spirit” version of Anakin Skywalker. So I knew deep down inside that this must be Anakin Skywalker from another part of the STAR WARS timeline. I have no memory of seeing this figure carded on my 1985 birthday trip to Toys R Us, so maybe that’s a big part of the reason why I didn’t have “Jedi Spirit” on the mind since I had no reference image for comparison. As an adult collector, it couldn’t be clearer that this is Kenner’s attempt to produce a nontangible, spirit version of Anakin Skywalker. Just look at how luminous of a being Anakin Skywalker is on the reference image. The action figure didn’t bring much excitement to me as a child. I think I was happy to own it, and that’s about it. But regardless of how I felt about the action figure, I loved Sebastian Shaw’s portrayal of the onscreen character. I don’t think the strong patriarchal stature he provided was replicated well with the Hayden Christensen replacement. Regardless, Anakin Skywalker provided some great Skywalker lineage into the Kenner line, and for that, I am forever grateful. I am glad they made him no matter how boring it is for an action figure.
