Detailed Visual Analysis

Yak Face

General Analysis

A creature with long facial hair wearing a furry mantle seen in JABBA's Throne Room and on the SAIL BARGE.

I sadly have no childhood memory of Yak Face. And when I first learned about him as an adult collector, I didn’t trust what I was hearing and stood in disbelief. That was until I had him in my hands at an antique show in Atlantic City NJ in the late nineties. Ironically, Yak Face is the consummate Kenner action figure. And it personifies collectability and rarity. And that’s all it takes to make an action figure as collectible as he is. I don’t think he is rare in a true sense necessarily, but he is an elusive and obscure Star Wars action figure. Yak Face is one great-looking figure. You can see how far Kenner came with their tooling and their paint jobs. And because of its beauty and relative scarcity, Yak Face will always be one of the most highly sought-after action figures in the Kenner line. Because I was only able to enjoy this figure as a young adult, he doesn’t have the same meaning to me as Snaggletooth, Walrus Man, Bossk (Bounty Hunter) or Bib Fortuna. But over time the figure holds a deeper place in my heart. While in college, I manage to secure three loose but pristinely mint samples for my collection, and I still have them today. I feature them in the Photo Gallery for your reference. I picked up extra vibrostaffs from Nikto figures over the years as well. After my good friend, Mark, passed away from cancer, his estate bequeathed to me a Trilogo Yak Face figure that was signed by Sean Crawford, the man who played him in RETURN OF THE JEDI. I will keep that special figure forever. Fast-forward to modern-day collecting, Hasbro did something amazing for collectors. They finally updated a definitive super-articulated version of Yak Face (Saelt-Marae) for THE VINTAGE COLLECTION, but he’s arriving in two separate ways. The first one is a pack-in figure with JABBA’S SAIL BARGE (THE KHETANNA) HasLab release and comes in THE POWER OF THE FORCE mock-up packaging along with COLLECTOR COIN. And then a general marketplace version in RETURN OF THE JEDI and proper name Saelt Marae is part of a 2019 case assortment.

Hasbro's Most Definitive Modern Counterpart: 2019's THE VINTAGE COLLECTION Yak Face figure from Jabba'S Sail Barge (The Khetanna) or 2019's THE VINTAGE COLLECTION Saelt-Marae (VC132) figure.
