The Disney Store is proud to introduce the Star Wars Toybox range of action figures, bringing adventures to life with characters from across The Walt Disney Company.
Disney has been making super-articulated 3.75” action figures in the form of the Star Wars Toybox line now for years. The line hasn’t garnered that large of an audience to date, and it may never reach the status of the Hasbro lines. But for those that do adore the line, Disney has been producing some fantastic releases. They launched this collectible line with three figures supporting The Force Awakens in 2015. Now in 2019, they’ve produced another three characters specific to The Rise Of Skywalker. Interestingly, however, two for the characters from The Rise Of Skywalker wave were part of the first The Force Awakens wave. So, the latest figures supporting Episode IX feel more like rehashes of previous efforts, more than it feels like getting two more all-new figures in the line. That said, Sith Trooper is an all-new figure across any action figure line, and it’s the sole new effort of this current wave. When Disney Stores can make animated super-articulated Star Wars figures with a wealth of accessories for under $13 it creates confusion for other lines, line The Vintage Collection.
The Sith Trooper is the most interesting figure from the wave. The figure isn’t approached differently from the other figures in the wave, of course, but when a figure is solely red and black in armor, there isn’t too much new to get excited about here. We’ve seen this character released in different scales already. Regardless, the Sith Trooper is designed well. It comes with an amazing 27 points of articulation, including a ball-jointed head and ball-jointed hips. But the premium articulation doesn’t end there. The shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles all have this premium articulation as well. Many collectors have already noted in the past that “rocker” ankles would have made a huge difference for these figures, and we agree with those assessments too. It’s nearly impossible to get both of the figure’s feet flat on the ground unless you have it in an upright position. So when you pose the Sith Trooper in action poses, the figure loses some of its scree-accurate aesthetics. Despite this, we’re overall happy with what Disney has been able to achieve with an armored Star Wars character.
The deco on the Sith Trooper is simple, but done well. There are a few instances of sloppy paint applications here and there, but you need to look hard to find them. The red armor is bright and vibrant. Hasbro utilized shiny plastic to create a shinier effect. All of the Star Wars Toybox figures simply accessorized, and the Sith Trooper comes with a revised red and black First Order blaster. We think the weapon accessory has been tooled well, but it doesn’t fit into either hand tightly enough, and it always falls out with the slightest movement of the figure. We experienced the same difficulties with the standard First Order Stormtrooper too. Also, the right thigh armor doesn’t have a slot to hold the weapon for alternate display. We have to say that Disney missed the boat here, and it’s something that should have been in the plans when designing this figure. Aside from these small setbacks, fans of Disney Infinity and any animated stylization of Star Wars characters are going to find favor with the Star Wars Toybox line. The Sith Trooper continues a great trend of new and classic Star Wars characters in animated style.
