Luke checks out R5-D4 as the Jawas try to persuade him to buy the droid.
Once a toy designer creates a base sculpt that can be utilized for other characters, new characters enter the toy line at a quicker pace. It also helps Kenner/Hasbro save on tooling costs because they’re able to use existing tooling or tweaked existing tooling to create new Star Wars action figures. Once they produced R2-D2 for the Action Collection line, it was a huge surprise when they added R5-D4 to the line as well. The first three small-scaled Action Collection figures were general marketplace items, but Kenner/Hasbro also produced a wave of three exclusives to Walmart. R2-D2 (with detachable utility arms), R5-D4, and Wicket The Ewok made up the second (and final) wave of small-scaled 12 Inch Figures under The Power Of The Force “2” line look. R5-D4 turned out inexplicably well. Kenner/Hasbro developed an all-new R5-series Astromech Droid head sculpt for the existing R2-D2 body, completely repainted the figure and added a lot of “dirt” to the paint job, and subsequently created the first R5-D4 12 Inch Figure produced. What’s more, Hasbro developed a separate removable antenna accessory for extra play value. The figure has appropriate dimensions, and R5-D4 looks fantastic next to the Jawa Action Collection figure (as well as R2-D2). Hasbro did a wonderful job on these astromech droids. We won’t claim that they’re perfect, but we’d be remiss not to compliment how well they turned out in this line of larger-sized action figures.
Status: R5-D4 is a retool and repaint of 1998's POTF2 [FF/TKC] R2-D2 figure. The time the figure has an all-new dome with removable antenna featurem and has been completely repainted.
