As Supreme Leader of the First Order, Kylo Ren wields more power than ever before.
With no 3.75” line, a new abbreviated 5” line, and very few other products produced to support Episode IX, The Rise Of Skywalker Hasbro Star Wars toy line is one of the smallest ever. The fans are once again divided, with about half of them loving it, and the other half thinking it’s the worst in the saga. But the toys made for the film by Hasbro turned out well. Saving on tooling wherever possible, Hasbro took older sculpts and reuse them where possible. In the case of the 12-Inch Figures line, Hasbro took 2017’s SW [TLJ] Kylo Ren figure, repainted it to make 2019’s TROS Supreme Leader Kylo Ren 12-Inch Figure by adding a little red paint on the helmet. Other than this extra detail, the figures are identical to each other. Hasbro opted to go with a “helmet on” portrait and an outfit without a cape. This creates a very cool and streamlined look for Kylo Ren, but not an appearance that was consistently visible in the film.
When it comes to a main hero or villain, you know you’re going to see him or her in every scale and format possible. For some characters, it makes a great deal of sense. But for others, some people might be puzzled as to why some characters get full treatment while many others do not. Supreme Leader Kylo Ren is a very dark character (visually and emotionally) has become a focal point of interest for current and new Star Wars fans. And his transition in The Rise Of Skywalker has brought new depth to his character. Supreme Leader Kylo Ren is a major part of the main story in Episode IX, so it makes sense to see many toys produced based on the character. A popular character already in the Hasbro toy line, we already have Supreme Leader Kylo Ren multiple times in the Force Link line and multiple times in the 12-Inch Figures lineup. Kylo Ren comes with seven (7) points of articulation. And the figure can wield a lightsaber.
Although in the recent past, Hasbro released too many 12-Inch Figures. But now they’re more reserved with the releases to retail. We know that some characters move, but others pile up so quickly. On top of that, they're adding older repackaged figures into the case assortment mixes to populate peg-warming trends further. Why is Darth Vader part of the first wave again? It’s a terrible figure, and everyone has it multiple times by now. No matter how you feel, there is a market for these figures. It may not be a big market, but apparently, it’s there. We have heard from multiple readers how well these figures interact with those who have disabilities as well as young boys and girls, where simplicity works better than intricacy. We have nothing against Hasbro producing a niche subset of toys for a smaller population of kids and those in need, but perhaps better planning will prevent the line from bottlenecking. No matter your opinion, the future of this line is unknown.
