Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) - POTF2 [FF/TKC] - Basic

Disguised as stormtroopers and fighting off a regiment of Imperial troops inside of the Death Star, the escaping band of heroes finds refuge in a garbage receptacle. The Rebels realize their problem has changed when the walls begin closing in.

If collectors had to pick one action figure from the earliest beginnings of The Power Of The Force “2” line, most probably wouldn’t have much difficulty choosing Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise). While it doesn’t represent the greatest likeness to the on-screen character, there is something about it that possesses charm. It’s one of the few examples of a figure that fits in well with the new streamlined look Kenner/Hasbro is employing with the latest figures in the 1998 “Freeze Frame” lineup. Part of the first wave of figures to kick off the line, Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) comes with no visible changes from the original release, save for perhaps slightly repositioned legs. But a lot of that could be due to the packaging, and how the factory placed the figure inside of it. Again, Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) isn’t a perfect action figure by any means, but we’d be lying if we thought the figure didn’t fit in well with the rest of the all-new figures in The Power Of The Force “2” [Freeze Frame/The Kenner Collection] lineup. In 1985, Luke Skywalker (Imperial Stormtrooper Outfit) was one of the hottest figures Kenner ever produced. Ten years later, the same was true for the POTF2 release. So, the figure will do well once again repackaged in the 1998 collection.

With a removable helmet and an E-11 blaster, the perfectly-accessorized Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) action figure has maintained strong interest by the collecting community. It seems to be an action figure that everyone wants in his or her collection. Kenner/Hasbro was smart for making Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) one of the preliminary figures in the modern Star Wars toy line. And it’s great to see they still have devotion to the character after all of these years. When the modern Star Wars toy line re-launched in 1995, Kenner/Hasbro knew that they’d have to produce modern versions for many of the original 1985 The Power Of The Force figures for the modern era. And it’s fantastic that Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) was one of the first characters on the shortlist to be made. Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) isn’t half bad, even today. He has a couple of issues, but Kenner did a fairly remarkable job on him. Sure, the figure still has hulky proportions, but his stature is a bit more streamlined than any of the other human characters in the line, and we feel he turned out a whole lot better. There is one glaring issue, however. Luke is supposed to be a little short for a stormtrooper. Sadly, he looks much larger than the Han Solo [Disguised As A Stormtrooper] exclusive mail-away figure.

As you’re aware, Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) comes with a removable stormtrooper helmet. We’re still impressed that Kenner has managed to mold a scaled helmet that doesn’t look too big, or a human head sculpt for Luke Skywalker that doesn’t appear too small or pea-sized. Also included with the figure is an E-11 blaster. These accessories prove that this figure is the modern update to the classic 1985 vintage Kenner figure. The head sculpt doesn’t favor Mark Hamill all that much, but it’s a standard head sculpt that we’ve come to accept for almost all of the Luke Skywalker action figures produced between 1995 and 1997. It’s a shame that Kenner/Hasbro does this because Luke’s appearance changes dramatically throughout the Original Trilogy. All in all, Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) is going to hold a special place in collectors’ hearts for years to come. Kenner will produce better and more accurate versions of this character, but this one feels “right” for now. Included with the 1998 version of Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) is a Freeze Frame Action slide. It is a screenshot of the Rebel heroes stuck in the trash compactor after rescuing Princess Leia Organa from the detention block. It’s a decent screenshot of the character, but we would have preferred a Lucasfilm promotional image instead with a larger image of the character displayed.
