Luke Skywalker and Han Solo receive their medals during a regal ceremony on Yavin 4.
One of the few new Action Collection figures released in 1998 was Luke Skywalker (In Ceremonial Gear). Although the figure doesn’t have a perfect likeness to actor Mark Hamill, the figure appears to have everything else it needs. It has a fantastic costume, plenty of accessories, and a check-off to your list of 12 Inch Figures you’ve always wanted to see Kenner/Hasbro eventually produce. Rounding out the opening “A New Hope” wave of Action Collection figures, Luke Skywalker (In Ceremonial Gear) is also joined by a straight repack of Greedo, a revised Sandtrooper, and a slightly revised Grand Moff Tarkin. Luke Skywalker (In Ceremonial Gear) comes with the signature yellow jacket the on-screen character wears during the ceremony at Massassi Temple after the Battle of Yavin. When removed, Luke Skywalker (In Ceremonial Gear) is wearing a black long-sleeved dress shirt which allows you to recreate some of the publicity images Lucasfilm shot with him not wearing the jacket, but the outfit from the conclusion of Episode IV. Luke Skywalker (In Ceremonial Gear) comes with an incorrect DL-44 blaster pistol. If you recall, he had “Princess Leia’s blaster” in his holster during this scene. Kenner/Hasbro missed this important detail. The figure also comes with a lightsaber hilt and a lightsaber blade. The hands the figure comes with don’t interact with the accessories all that well. The hands are cupped too wide to accommodate the accessories. The portrait of Luke Skywalker (In Ceremonial Gear) is probably best described as “just as good as it is bad.” At some angles, it resembles Luke Skywalker; at others, it looks like Luke Skywalker in drag. Either way, we wanted this figure for years in our collection, and now it’s here. And as one of the only all-new Action Collection figures of 1998, it’s one collectors should appreciate.
Status: Luke Skywalker (In Ceremonial Gear) is an all-new figure.
