The Carbonized Collection Remnant Stormtrooper figure has been treated with a sleek metallic finish down to the finest detail.
We’re not totally against the idea of a “carbonized” line of The Vintage Collection action figures. We’d much rather prefer Hasbro to give us something new instead, of course. But the carbonized sub-line as a whole isn’t the worst thing Hasbro could do for collectors. They could make another Rey after all. One figure that is as interesting as it is odd is the Remnant Stormtrooper (Carbonized) release. The “carbonized” finish makes the plastic look “cheap” instead of enhanced. And it comes off looking like a cheap $.25 gumball machine toy than a quality action figure. The Remnant Stormtrooper (Carbonized) isn’t without merit, however. The paint operations giving it dirt and other details are nicely applied. The figure still has a wealth of premium articulation, and achieves poses beyond imagination. At the very least, collectors can use the Remnant Stormtrooper (Carbonized) figure to help build up their armies. But we still like to make it resoundingly clear that this figure looks more like the zombie Death Troopers from the Expanded Universe, that it does a Remnant Stormtrooper in a carbonized finish. Like all of the carbonized The Vintage Collection action figures, they’re egregiously priced at $17.99 each. How in the world does Hasbro justify this? We’re not entirely crazy about the hologram-like card art. It’s extra thick (which is good), but the hologram effect obscures the character image.
Collectors of The Vintage Collection line fell for the Remnant Stormtrooper’s original release. When 3.75” collectors receive an Imperial Stormtrooper in super-articulated status, it makes them happy collectors. The Remnant Stormtrooper (Carbonized) release is probably no exception, either. No matter how it looks, collectors will purchase at least one to place on the walls of their collecting rooms. The Remnant Stormtrooper (Carbonized) figure is a repaint of 2020’s TVC Remnant Stormtrooper (VC165) figure. Hasbro added a different combination of tan dirt and black carbon-scoring compared to the figure’s original release. There are other battle-damages added to the figure to give the Remnant Stormtrooper a unique appearance. Like its initial release, the only issue here is that all of the figures have the same markings. They’re clones of each other. You cannot tell them apart. The lack of uniqueness is problematic for army building purposes. Then again, collectors won’t likely be army-building this particular action figure. As we’ve mentioned earlier, the deco choice is interesting. This action figure immediately reminded us of the Death Troopers from the 2009 novel entitled Death Troopers. Between the bone-colored armor with cracks and other battle-damage markings, the Remnant Stormtrooper’s only thing missing to look like a Death Trooper is a zombie visible underneath the armor.
Hasbro worked in an astounding 30 points of premium articulation into this figure/sculpt. We love the ball-socket head with the reverse ball-socket neck joint. It gives the figure a superb range of movement in the head, creating an eerily human-like movement. We hope they don’t change this approach in the future. But the goodness doesn’t stop there. Hasbro loaded the figure with revised ball-jointed articulation points, and the chunky armor barely inhibits the figure’s full range of movement in these areas. For example, the elbows bend at an angle that is realistic and practical to the figure. The Remnant Stormtrooper (Carbonized) figure holds the included E-11 blaster with both hands and at an upwards angle, ready for battle. And you can outstretch the figure’s arms and make most of the shoulder movement, too. The inclusion of ball-jointed wrists is like the icing on the cake. We have to credit Hasbro with carefully integrating such crucial movement into this action figure. Likewise, Hasbro tooled the armor in a way that optimizes the figure’s articulation and movement as well. They work in tandem to allow for the most extensive range of motion. Articulation enthusiasts will be thrilled once they realize the poses they’ll achieve, thanks to how Hasbro worked them into this figure’s articulation system. From ball-jointed hips to ball-jointed ankles, the Remnant Stormtrooper (Carbonized) can reach a fantastic amount of positions. But are you willing to pay what its MSRP commands?
