The Carbonized Collection Imperial Death Trooper figure has been treated with a sleek metallic finish down to the finest detail.
Making its debut in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the Imperial Death Trooper is now part of the Disney+ The Mandalorian series. Already part of The Vintage Collection under the “Rogue One” banner, the Imperial Death Trooper gets its first carded release as part of The Mandalorian collection with this Imperial Death Trooper (Carbonized) Walmart exclusive. There is little difference between the original release and the version part of the “carbonized” update, in all honesty. Yes, of course, the paint operations are different, but aside from that, they kept the tones relatively similar. There aren’t any dramatic transitions in color for both Cara Dune (Carbonized) and The Mandalorian (Carbonized). Originally released in The Black Series [Phase III] Walmart exclusive line, the Imperial Death Trooper got reissued in The Vintage Collection on a Rogue One Card. It is now on The Mandalorian card for the first time exclusively as Imperial Death Trooper (Carbonized). There aren’t any differences here save for the “carbonized” layer of paint. So don’t expect this figure to stand out like the others. We don’t know how well this line will fare at retail. Why are these figures $17.99?
The Imperial Death Trooper design is based on the old Ralph McQuarrie concept artwork. Beyond that, there is little explanation to explain why these characters are tall and thin. And why are they set so apart from the rest of the Imperial army? We know that they serve as bodyguards to Director Krennic, and we’re looking for their story development in The Mandalorian. Hasbro incorporated the Imperial Death Trooper’s traits beautifully into the 3.75” super-articulated range of action figures. With an impressive 27 points of articulation, the Imperial Death Trooper can accomplish pretty much any pose you desire. The figure comes with a ton of ball-jointed articulation, and it allows a figure this small to appear mobile on a display shelf. Although the Imperial Death Trooper is mostly black, the figure does come with beautifully applied paint operations, and the “Carbonized” final coat of paint does the job to allow it to fit into an exclusive sub-line of action figures. The character has a green visor, but it’s darker on this release. And there are other green details on the helmet as well that appear muted as well. You’ll also find gray and silver details. The Imperial Death Trooper is shiny, where it needs to be shiny, and dull where it needs to be dull.
It’s excellent to see the Imperial Death Trooper get additional life under Hasbro and Disney Star Wars. This figure is still the smartest straight repack in The Vintage Collection’s reboot. And it’s wise that they’ve carried the figure forward into the “Carbonized” line. If there’s a character that can serve as the symbol for Rogue One, it would have to be the Imperial Death Trooper. The Imperial Death Trooper was featured prominently on the Rogue One line look packaging art. It’s part of The Vintage Collection twice now: one under Rogue One and, currently, The Mandalorian. The Imperial Death Trooper comes with a blaster pistol and a blaster rifle in addition to a removable pauldron piece. The figure can hold both of them beautifully, but sadly Hasbro didn’t design the strap to fit the smaller blaster at its side. We do like the “Carbonized” packaging because of its thickness. Although the bubble is WAY too big, Hasbro chose an alternate image for the artwork and changed the “pill” color and figure placement backer to green. Unfortunately, the picture is muddled because of the “foiled” treatment it received to stand out as part of an exclusive line. We found it difficult to make out all of the characters in this style of packaging.
