Boba Fett - DST - Seven Inch Figures

If you’re a longtime Star Wars collector, you probably feel like the last thing the collecting community needs is another scale of action figures. But in typical Disney cash-cow fashion, that’s what’s recently transpired. This time, Diamond Select Toys gets into the action and joins the throng of premium and super-articulated Star Wars action figure makers. It is now producing a line of seven-inch action figures for Star Wars enthusiasts. The “Select” line of seven-inch action figures is impressive. They’ve launched the line with Boba Fett and Darth Maul. First off, we need to comment on the lackluster packaging. The figures are housed in a massive bubble against a flimsy backer card. There is little artwork against the mostly-white background, and the figures look lost in all of the open “air space.” Diamond Select Toys should reduce the footprint of the packaging by at least 50%. There is NO NEED AT ALL for the packaging to take up so much space. The figure is an inch taller than Hasbro’s The Black Series 6” and the packaging is at least five or six times larger. Let’s take a closer look at Boba Fett. Diamond Select Toys based Boba Fett on the character’s appearance from Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi. Coincidentally, they screwed up on the package’s reference images, as they chose stills from The Empire Strikes Back instead. As you know, Boba Fett’s costume significantly differs between Episode V and Episode VI, so, unfortunately, they messed up the artwork here.

This Boba Fett figure is better than decent. We won’t go so far as to say it’s perfect, but it’s well done. We imagine many collectors will approve of what Diamond Select Toys accomplished here. We’re sure they do not want any competition with Hasbro’s The Black Series 6” line. Boba Fett comes with an impressive 25 points of articulation, which means the 7” line of figures by Diamond Select Toys is a little less articulated than Hasbro’s 6” figures. The range of movement isn’t what we had hoped. For example, Boba Fett can barely hold the blaster rifle with two hands. If you configure it successfully, you’re limited to one or two poses. We also had some difficulty making the most out of the lower body articulation. It seems this figure should attain more posing options than Hasbro’s Boba Fett figure, but it doesn’t. The detail on Boba Fett is excellent. It looks to us that Diamond Select Toys faithfully recreated the character’s colors beautifully and accurately to what we see on the screen. Boba Fett looks proportionate and comes with an impressive amount of detail, which reminds us of the character we fell in love with four decades ago. Let’s discuss some other issues with Boba Fett. The rangefinder is obnoxiously too long and bent. It needs to be shorter and more rigid, so it doesn’t lose shape. Seeing what Diamond Select Toys did with their Boba Fett helps us understand why Hasbro chose to give The Black Series Boba Fett a rangefinder that doesn’t articulate.

Another small disappointment is the Z-6 Mitronomon jetpack is NOT removable. Perhaps this is an unnecessary request to complain about here, but we love the option of dressing or undressing Boba Fett with it depending upon our needs. Also, the cape is molded for this release. Hasbro’s is a soft-goods. Admittedly, the molded cape looks incredibly better than soft-goods, but it has the same drape no matter how you pose the figure, so that causes some awkwardness, as you can imagine. The paint operations throughout the Boba Fett figure are beautiful. We’re quite pleased with what Diamond Select Toys accomplished here. Boba Fett comes with a decent amount of accessories. They included interchangeable hands. The hands that hold the blaster rifle are the interchangeable ones. Boba Fett also comes with a blaster rifle, and it has a blast effect that attaches to the barrel. Boba Fett also has a removable cartridge in the left gauntlet. The cartridge creates space for you to attach the fireball accessory. We love that they included this accessory. It looks incredible. Lastly, they also included two flame attachments for the jetpack. You can plug them in and take them out as needed. Overall, you get a lot of “stuff” here for $24.99. This Boba Fett is $5 cheaper and comes with more accessories than Hasbro’s ROTJ Boba Fett. That’s honestly saying something. The biggest question to ask yourself is if we need another scale of figures. You probably don’t.
