If you were a Star Wars collector before the dreaded Disney takeover, you remember some of the universe’s coolest troopers from the video games. One of the most significant multimedia events took place in 2008. It was called The Force Unleashed. While fans have missed opinions on the game itself, the storyline interested non-gamers in a way that “forced” them into collecting various merchandise on the characters introduced in the game. If you partook in The Force Unleashed multimedia event in any capacity, you likely remember the Incinerator Troopers. Over a decade later, the characters are utilized in the popular The Mandalorian Disney+ series, much to the pleasure of Star Wars fans everywhere. Whenever there is an opportunity to reuse existing tooling to bring us a new action figure, you better believe that Hasbro will ensure they produce these characters to help save on costs as often as possible. As you should expect, the Incinerator Trooper is now part of The Black Series [Phase IV] line, but no one should believe that this is the character’s first entry into the Hasbro Star Wars action figure line.
In 2008, Hasbro released the first Incinerator Trooper as part of the Darth Vader (With Incinerator Troopers) Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Commemorative Collection three-pack. Back then, collectors got three action figures for the price of a single 6” figure. So it was relatively easy to army build the 3.75” Incinerator Troopers as a result. (The three-pack was also reissued in The Legacy Collection a year later.) Now part of a different section of the Star Wars timeline, the Incinerator Trooper’s role in The Mandalorian is a little more aggressive. The character now appears to have some more exciting gear. Utilizing 2020’s TBS [P4] Imperial Stormtrooper (TM02) figure, Hasbro repainted the base figure and added all-new equipment, including a harness, flamethrower, and canister combination piece to outfit the character properly for its role in the series. Unfortunately, the flamethrower isn’t detachable from the harness or the canisters. But with a little perseverance, you can pull down the gear and remove it from the action figure for an alternate take if you’re interested. The new gear is stunningly tooled, and the paint operations meet our expectations fully.
Hasbro worked in an incredible 30 points of articulation in the Incinerator Trooper 6” figure. The helmet has smooth movement thanks to its double joint. Not only does it come with a ball-socket head, but it also has a reversed ball-socket neck creating an optimum range of motion. The movement’s fluidity is fantastic, and you can tilt the head at every angle possible thanks to this ingenious design. The design of the helmet is equally impressive. Hasbro has come far with their tooling technology. The Incinerator Trooper shows collectors how exact Hasbro can be to capture every nuance and detail with the on-screen costume and apply to a 6” action figure, along with unprecedented articulation. All of these things are not small, and Hasbro should be commended for doing it effortlessly. Although not new for the Incinerator Trooper, the wonderfully installed “butterfly” joints are the new normal for Hasbro, and they do wonders for the figure. They give a full lateral movement of the shoulders. In our opinion, the Incinerator Trooper is only the beginning of where Hasbro can take the Imperial Stormtrooper tooling. And now that The Vintage Collection collectors have the same template available, we hope that Hasbro beats them all out like there is no tomorrow.
