May the Force be with you.... and your Droids!
It’s unbelievable to think that we have half a dozen “Halloween-themed” holiday astromech droids part of the Disney Droid Factory line under our belts now. Where does the time go? To date, we’ve received 2016’s R2-BOO that comes with Halloween colors. Then they released 2017’s R3-BOO17, and it came with a glow-in-the-dark feature. Then in 2018, they released R4-BOO18, which they painted like a piece of candy corn. In 2019, Disney released R5-BOO19 and painted it like a skeleton. And then, in 2020, they created BB-BOO20 to look like a pumpkin. Now, for 2021, we have R6-W1CH. The latest release is based on a witch and inspired by the Nightsisters arc in The Clone Wars. To be less Star Wars-y and more Halloween-y, Disney should have given this droid a green dome and a black body to recreate the standard color scheme of the witches we see at Halloween. A broom accessory or attachment would have scored them double points. Regardless, there’s a new addition to the Droid Factory line, which means you either love it or love it. We love them and are happy to have another character to give us more parts for our Droid Factory inventory.
R6-W1CH looks more like an astromech droid you’d see during the Battle of Yavin than on Dathomir, however. Reminiscent of R5-K6, R6-W1CH is primarily red with bold black and white accents and details to give the droid textures and a colorful appearance. Without the hat, you’d have no idea that R6-W1CH was created to celebrate 2021’s Halloween season, but maybe they are trying to distance themselves from that. Admittedly, some of the droids Disney produced for this subset of celebratory holiday figures were ludicrous. Droids painted to look like skeletons and pumpkins are relatively interesting, but candy corn? Come on now, that’s a little bizarre. However, collectors don’t seem to mind paying $12.99 for these action figures, as they fit in perfectly with the Hasbro Star Wars 3.75-inch line of action figures. R6-W1CH breaks down into five main parts, and then the hat makes the sixth. You know this figure’s articulation system well at this point. And while it has excellent articulation, we feel that these figures could use a few more points of movement.
We already made this point, but we strongly feel that there are SO MANY other Halloween-themed ideas Disney could go with before resorting to mimicking candy. We’re happy to see them return to a Halloween “character” with R6-W1CH, but we feel it misses the mark a bit because it doesn’t look like a Halloween witch and not a witch from Star Wars either. We’re curious to see how long Disney will decide to do this sub-line of Droid Factory figures. They’ve already branched out to produce 3.75-inch action figures like 4-LOM (which is excellent, by the way). And with no new films out in the Disney Star Wars era, they’re not putting new astromech droid sets into production. Whatever Disney decides to do in the future, we hope they continue making both Halloween and Christmas astromech for as long as the Star Wars/Droid Factory line is active. Truthfully, R6-W1CH might be the weakest Halloween droid to date. We aren’t crazy about the “cany corn” droid, but at least it’s more Halloween-themed than this one. Your opinions may vary.
