Disney changed things up for 2021, and after abandoning a consecutive run of holiday-themed BB units, they’ve returned to the astromech droids and released R5-D33R. R5-D33R is a white and gold R5-series astromech droid, somewhere on the ice planet Hoth and wears a cap with antlers. The droid looks alright, but we wish Disney took it further to make it look more like a reindeer, or perhaps a little more like Rudolph. Imagine a primarily brown droid with white details and a big red spot on the dome for a nose. And then the antlers cap would be the icing on the cake. Can’t you imagine that? Regardless, R5-D33R is cute in both name and appearance and is another excellent addition to this now long-running collection of Christmas-themed astromech droids. Those who collect them are amassing quite a group of odd-looking droids. Available only at Shop Disney, R5-D33R may be as interesting as past releases but still helps to add creativity to previous efforts and is a welcomed addition to the line. Disney is now in its seventh year, offering astromech droid fans a unique holiday/Christmas-themed droid for year-end celebrations. Some aren’t crazy about these figures, but generally speaking, collectors find them as joyful as the holiday season itself. Admittedly, R5-D33R works well and is another wonderful addition to the family of holiday-inspired droids to date. As you know, Star Wars collectors adore and revere Disney Parks’ Droid Factory line. The figures aren’t perfect, but it’s more difficult to hate them and simple to love them. Yes, collectors are still irritated about removing the foot wires, and sometimes the paint operations aren’t as perfect as they need to be for collectors. Still, overall, Disney produces a line of solid figures that are clever, thoughtful, and appreciated by droid fans worldwide. Since 2015, Disney has been releasing a series of holiday-themed astromech droids in the spirit of the Christmas season. They remain their strongest sellers and sell out the fastest. R5-D33R also sold out immediately and is already commanding a premium on the aftermarket.

The names of the astromechs in this line are straightforward to ridiculous. Disney gave R3-BOO17 an absurd name, and now R5-D33R plays on a stylized form of the word “deer” because that’s what this droid imitates. Just like its predecessors, Disney will never run out of droid call numbers. There are so many options from which to choose. While you don’t associate sentimentality and glad tidings with an astromech droid necessarily, we feel that Disney Parks has done a fantastic job at tying everything together brilliantly. Just think about it some. We get a droid that breaks down into multiple parts and whose parts are interchangeable with other droids, comes with a Christmas-themed color palette, and is as kid-friendly as it is collector-friendly. R5-D33R is a win for the line, regardless of whether you like its color and design or not. Typically, we don’t display any of our astromech droids with silly “hats.” But we might make an exception this time. We’re glad to see the change of pace here. We hope that Disney keeps pumping out these cool Droid Factory astromech droids for the holidays. They bring us holiday cheer. We hope they do for you also! Merry Christmas!
