Crude and slovenly, Dengar was nonetheless an effective bounty hunter. While some hunters prided themselves on finesse and style, Dengar preferred firepower and destruction.

The character Dengar is an enigma in the action figure line because it experiences the same phenomenon every time Hasbro releases an action figure. Dengar is a perpetual peg-warmer. Whether released in the Kenner action figure line or released in The Vintage Collection or The Black Series line, it piles up. But there’s more. It eventually sells through, then commands hefty premiums on the aftermarket shortly after its sell-out. This scenario is more or less accurate for every action figure interpretation released of the Corellian bounty hunter. Perhaps the most surprising aftermarket activity was 2018’s TBS [P3] Dengar (74) figure. Once it sold through various retailers, collectors began scrambling to add the fan-favorite bounty hunter into their collection. And for this reason, it makes sense that Hasbro added it into The Black Series Archive line to get it out to retail once again, a bit better looking and screen accurate. The Black Series Archive Dengar will probably do well the second time at retail. It will be interesting to see if this version also commands a premium down the road.

Hasbro approached Dengar by how the character looks in The Empire Strikes Back. But it’s important to note that if you remove the backpack, you can easily recreate the bounty hunter’s appearance in Jabba’s palace during Return Of The Jedi. The first version came with Photo Real technology, but Hasbro cleaned up its application a bit more with The Black Series Archive release. From the mummified-inspired wraps on the head to the deep wounded scars on the face, Dengar is another beautiful release in Hasbro’s 6-inch action figure line, and collectors of the line have good reason to be happy when their action figures look this remarkable. Dengar is a tad shorter and much stockier than most other characters in The Black Series 6-inch line. But Hasbro developed the figure faithfully to what we see in Episode V. The differences in the body type and height are all inherent to the character, and Hasbro masterfully recreated all of this bounty hunter’s traits beautifully. We’re incredibly impressed with Dengar’s head sculpt, and Hasbro tooled a portrait that perfectly mimics the actor’s features.

What’s impressive here is that, although Dengar’s armor is large and bulky, the figure’s articulation works exceptionally well, and the figure easily poses in various ways. We noticed some top-heaviness issues, but with patience, you can remedy this issue with careful balancing. The “rocker” ankles are a bit thin and loose to support the figure’s weight. Dengar comes with three separate accessories. It appears that Hasbro followed suit with what they did for 2010’s TVC Dengar (VC01) figure. Dengar comes with a blaster pistol, a blaster rifle, and a removable backpack. Each is exquisitely sculpted with a ton of detail (especially the backpack) and interacts with the figure very, very nicely. Dengar comes with a holster for the smaller blaster pistol. You can keep it housed in the holster when not used, but the figure’s hands can accommodate it. Hasbro paired the larger blaster rifle with 4-LOM (67), which also interacts with Dengar wonderfully. Overall, this is an excellent figure. And with the previous re-releases of Bossk and IG-88 in The Black Series Archive line, more collectors will have the opportunity to collect all of the bounty hunters with less difficulty.
