Well, well, well. What is there to say about The Vintage Collection Figrin D’an And The Modal Nodes multipack? We never anticipated or expected Hasbro to produce it, so that’s a plus. With the current Hasbro Star Wars team entirely out of touch with its core audience, an Original Trilogy-focused set is probably last on their list. But let’s not give them too much credit. Almost a year ago, they produced an underappreciated Figrin D’an action figure. It came with three musical instruments, and in retrospect, that now seems odd. But for those that could muster enough bravery to credit Hasbro with its production, they found a lovely and underrated action figure in The Vintage Collection. So here we are a year later, and most of the band is here, save for one glaring omission. Hasbro gave us seven slight repaints of the Figrin D’an action figure, each with a unique instrument (well, two characters play the same instrument). In this set, we get Figrin D’an — first kloo horn, Nalan Cheel — bandfill, Lirin Car’n — second kloo horn (but this guy sat out the live performances and was wearing a different outfit while hanging out at a bar table), Tech Mo’r — ommni box, Sun’il Ei’de — drums, Tedn Dahai — fanfar, and lastly, Doikk Na’ts — Dorenian beshniquel. Much to our surprise, they’ve missed Ickabel G’ont — double jocimer (whose instrument looks much like the fanfar Tedn Dahai plays). What makes this character’s exclusion perplexing is that Hasbro included it in the Action Series line from the late nineties. Why did they forget this Bith here?
The new instruments are excellent, especially the ommni box (complete for the first time) and drum set. We never expected to see these accessories produced for The Vintage Collection, so we consider them gifts in this set. They also updated the bandfill, complete for the first time in this line and in a 3.75-inch scale. The action figures interact beautifully with one another. We’re happy to have seven-eighths of the band now officially. At worst, you can take the fanfar from your single-carded Figrin D’an figure, give it to your single-carded Figrin D’an figure and pretend it is Ickabel G’ont. But technically, the double jocimer is a different instrument and is colored differently than the fanfar. We would have loved to have each character packaged individually (but sold as a set) instead of in boring and pointless plastic-free packaging, but this is the way of the new awful world order. Optics go further than anything else these days. We digress. The Figrin D’an And The Modal Nodes set isn’t as kind to the wallet as the other “troop builder” packs released to date. If you do the math, you’ll discover you’re paying pennies less than $13 a figure, so “so much” for the bargain pricing on these multipacks. They also cost you as much as the all-new basic figures, which steams us to no end. But like everything in a 3.75-inch scale, better to have it expensive than not all. Or is that not working anymore? We’re happy to have our set. We don’t know if that’s a consensus or not, however.
Hasbro found a way to present this figure as a mostly all-new action figure, deceptively. But the opposite of this is true. We were disappointed to notice the old legs Hasbro reused for Figrin D’an and the Biths immediately. Hasbro took the legs of 2019’s TVC Death Star Gunner (VC147) figure, painted them gray except for the boots, and seamlessly worked them into the Bith’s body frame. What aggravates us is that the Death Star Gunner’s pants have pockets. A Bith musician’s pants are form fitted, without any wrinkles or pockets, and that’s not what we have on Figrin D’an And The Modal Nodes, much to our chagrin. The absence of “rocker” ankles makes posing a figure jamming to music while playing an instrument very difficult. They kept falling over during our photo shoot. And we all know how frustrating ball-jointed hips with swivel thighs are for collectors. Positioning the figure in “musical” ways became increasingly annoying while expecting it to maintain the poses. Hasbro also took 2010’s/2019’s TVC Luke Skywalker (Endor [Endor Capture/Jedi Knight Outfit]) (VC23) figure and used the arms. That’s a colossal setback here. Despite the reused parts, we’re THRILLED to see Figrin D’an And The Modal Nodes finally part of The Vintage Collection. Something needs to be done about Ickabel G’ont, but this is a significant step in the right direction. Now, they need to finish the rest of the cantina aliens. We’ve waited much too long for all of this.
