A $21 3.75-inch Star Wars action figure repaint of an Original Trilogy character beats an all-new figure from Disney Star Wars any day. And as sad as it is to accept it, we live in this reality now. Thankfully, Hasbro has decided to make the most out of 2021’s TVC Boba Fett (VC186) sculpt to produce new variations and repaint of this notorious bounty hunter for The Vintage Collection. And we’re loving every single figure made. From the “vintage Kenner-inspired” release to the comic book versions of this popular Mandalorian, we’re building a fantastic army of Boba Fett action figures with record speed. Hasbro’s technology brings a new level of quality to what we callously refer to as a repaint. While collectors especially appreciate tweaks to the tooling for accuracy reasons, if Hasbro keeps pumping out Boba Fett repaints like this, we’ll continue to beg them to keep producing them. We might even suggest they “redo” some of the versions they released earlier in the line that could use better updating through newer tooling. We digress. The Boba Fett (Vintage Comic Art) figure is colorful and gorgeous. It’s a most welcome addition to the 3.75-inch super-articulated action figure line. If you can’t appreciate bright comic book art, please move along. The joy this action figure brings us is unparalleled, and although we’d like to piss all over the offensive MSRP, we’ll swallow our pride because we want to see more of this stuff in The Vintage Collection.

Boba Fett (Vintage Comic Art) may look familiar to you. Through the Comic Packs series, in both the 30 (77-07), The Legacy Collection, and Legacy Collection lineups, we’ve seen our fair share of Boba Fett and Boba Fett impersonators released through this format. Although each has unique and distinct coloring, characters like Fenn Shysa, Tobbi Dala, and the Boba Fett with Sarlacc slime are wildly reminiscent of the “first appearance” of Boba Fett in Marvel comics. Now we have the closest match possible thanks to Hasbro and Target working together to bring Boba Fett (Vintage Comic Art) to the table. They used 2021’s TVC Boba Fett (VC186) figure to produce all of the Target exclusive Boba Fetts, and some are straight repaints while others have slight changes made wherever possible for faithfulness to the source material. The paint job on this figure is glorious. Hasbro paid careful attention to detail and recreated all the colorful “reflections” visible in the helmet. They followed through with the rest of the figure to match color for color, working within the parameters of the VC186 mold. It works well. You probably won’t pay attention to any of the inconsistencies. We’re happy to report that Hasbro ensured they used the blaster rifle that Boba Fett used in The Empire Strikes Back, as well as the smaller handheld blaster pistol. So, we appreciate that they noted the importance of the weaponry. It goes a long way.

Boba Fett (Vintage Comic Art) comes with an impressive 30 points of articulation. Plus, with “rocker” ankles becoming commonplace in the line, it is easier to appreciate these figures as little works of art. Hasbro tooled this figure so incredibly well that it looks like a miniature The Black Series 6-inch Boba Fett figure. What Hasbro achieved for this action figure is an accomplishment, and no one should take anything for granted here because it’s a high-quality interpretation of Boba Fett. The figure’s articulation system is excellent, and they all function beautifully. The joints are hidden well throughout the figure, and more importantly, the insert portions of the ball joints match the surrounding areas of the figure for a seamless aesthetic. The joints throughout the formation are tight and hold their positions well. Aside from minor center-of-gravity issues, we had no trouble posing the figure. You may find that the figure’s jetpack interferes with it through certain poses as it sometimes wants to pull the figure down. You can counteract this natural effect with some careful positioning. All of the joints on Boba Fett articulate with buttery movement. Hasbro engineered a stunning action figure that functions as nicely as it looks. So, while there is no doubt that this is a gorgeous action figure, let’s complain about the $20.99 MSRP. What are they thinking? It’s unacceptable and borders on offensive. Hasbro has to get this together better.
