Boba Fett - TSC - Basic (SAGA 006)

Every once in a while Hasbro gives us a new version of Boba Fett, and it only makes sense. Boba is the biggest bounty hunter this side of Bespin, and he’s regarded by many as the coolest villain in the Star Wars universe. Back in the 2003 Star Wars "Saga" line, we had the opportunity to purchase Boba Fett (The Pit Of Carkoon) ('03 #08) figure that almost resembles a scaled down version of those popular Unleashed sculptures (from the same era) with an awesome scene-specific display stand that could be plugged into his jetpack to give it the appearance of flight during a heated battle. It also had a cool “quick-draw” action feature. It wasn’t a bad figure by any means and we liked it for what it was, but there were quite a lot of little things that were just ‘off’ about it. Most notably, he suffered from an awkward stance when he wasn’t plugged into the display stand. His right leg had knee articulation but no ankle articulation, and his left leg had ankle articulation but no knee articulation, so there really wasn’t much in the way of consistent flexibility. Also, there was a big button (to activate the action feature) where the rocket in his jetpack should be, and it just looked weird and out of place.

Fast forward to the "vintage" Original Trilogy Collection in 2004. We got a definitive Boba Fett figure that was super-articulated and basically everything we could have possibly wanted (apart from that jetpack that falls off when you look at it funny; but that’s for another review). Almost two years later, we arrive at The Saga Collection’s Battle Of Carkoon wave, which has given us a decent upgrade for our vast collection of Boba Fett figures and interestingly, a mix of parts between those last two (the 2003 and 2004 versions). So is it an effective combination? Well, like so much in the Star Wars universe, it depends greatly on your point of view. Overall, it’s a very decent figure. It benefits from the VOTC figure’s thorough leg articulation, something the old Saga figure was in desperate need of, and it’s still got the cool display stand. And thanks to the addition of the VOTC figure’s legs, Boba has 12 points of articulation. It's an acceptable amount despite the fact that the positioning of the angle-cut elbow joints prevents him from holding his blaster rifle with two hands and makes the left arm stick out a bit too much.

It's important to stress how great the inclusion of the VOTC figure’s legs is on this figure. It gives him nearly unlimited movement, which is something every action-oriented character like Boba Fett definitely needs. That action feature brought over from the 2003 release gives it some added playability as well, and it makes this figure a very effective toy. They’ve even improved the action feature this time around by making the button on the jetpack look more like the rocket and less like a button and that’s an extra little detail that makes a big difference. If there’s one noticeable problem with the action feature, it’s that it causes the figure’s shoulder joints to be a bit loose and floppy. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s noticeable. So what’s the verdict? Boba Fett figure is a very cool figure that’s a worthy addition to your collection. It definitely brings us the very best elements from the 2003 Star Wars "Saga" release and the 2004 VOTC release, and they took the time to make little improvements as well. The enhancements make it worth the while for sure.
