Mawhonic is a Podracer in the Boonta Eve Classic Podrace. He arrives on Tatooine with dreams of glory, but loses control of his Podracer and crashes in the Mushroom Mesa stretch after fellow Podracer Sebulba deliberately rams into him.
Aren’t you a little short for a Gran podracer? Many collectors would like to this so, but they’d be wrong. Very wrong indeed. The outcries from so many fans about being upset how small statured Mawhonic is is very perplexing to us. While we certainly were surprised by his actual height just as everyone else was, we immediately accepted. After all, it makes a whole lot of sense. Podracers are the space equivalent of jockeys. They’re typically short, mostly non-human and have a wide-range of shapes depending on what type of species they are. What threw most collectors off with Mawhonic is that the Gran is an established species in the Star Wars universe Nearly every collector knows Ree-Yees all too well and he set the stage for how our brains see the Gran species. All of that was compromised when Mahownic samples started arriving to collectors’ homes from overseas eBay auctions. But really, let’s move on from this already. Despite Star Wars reference sites clearly documenting his height at 1.22 meters which is significantly shorter than the average human male, one look at his body shape (especially in the lower half of his body) show that he is dwarfed, and for lack of a better politically correct term, a midget. Hasbro captured every last detail perfectly here and he’s absolutely a The Vintage Collection status figure. Hasbro did an extremely incredible job on this figure. Count yourselves fortunate.
Hasbro packed an incredible 14 points of articulation into this figure. Keeping in mind how tiny this figure is, it’s quite a feat that they did so in an amazing fashion. The joints are well hidden for the most part and his proportions are flawless. He has a wider belly and short legs and these details complement his longer arms without his appearance looking the slightest bit distorted. His head has been reduced to fit the body and the sculpt is incredible. But please don’t expect to utilize it to customize an updated Ree-Yees figure. (It’s much too small for that.) Hasbro replicated the extraordinarily large earring hole in his left ear perfectly. If you look at various stills of Mawhonic, you’ll see that Hasbro nailed this detail. His skin is a fleshy pink color and Hasbro accented it with various dark freckles and moles and crossing lines to give his skin incredible texture. Even if you’re not into Episode I, you have to give credit where credit is due and this one figure exemplifies this. His armor is very realistic and overtly gray and silver. And because he’s barefoot, Hasbro was considerate to give a faint coat of dirt on his feet, but you’ll have to look closely at it to see it. It isn’t a blatant paint deco. Interestingly, Mawhonic comes with the repainted blaster rifle of 2007’s VTSC Bossk (Bounty Hunter) figure. It’s a great weapon and suits Mawhonic very well. The new paint job is beautiful on it too.
Mawhonic so far is the only “basic exclusive” figure to come with his own podracing flag. Would you believe that Hasbro decided to give him a flag with a black flagpole? Both the Podracer Pilots Toys R Us exclusive and the Mos Espa Arena Battle Packs set from Walmart’s Discover The Force promotion all have off-white flagpoles? We don’t understand this move, especially since Mawhonic is part of the Discover The Force promotion too. Now collector’s have one flag that stands out from the rest. This type of things is maddening to type A/obsessive-compulsive collectors. And most of us are. You’ll also get a Galactic Battle Game card, black Star Wars stand and a die. If you’re into this sort of thing, you have more variety now for that. If you’re not, consider it a pack-in premium you may or may want to add to your collection. Mawhonic is absolutely perfection. If you’re not into Episode I, this figure should whet your appetite for what Hasbro will be able to do for Ree-Yees when it comes time to update him. The Star Wars basic figure line has come so far. Between the stunning amount of articulation to the incredible sculpt and beautiful paint job, we just don’t know how much better of a job Hasbro do on this figure. This is coming from those who aren’t even into podracers. That’s how important this action figure is. Be sure to give it a chance. There’s a great deal to appreciate here.
Status: Mawhonic is an all-new figure. His gun is a repaint of the one that came with 2007's VTSC Bossk (Bounty Hunter) figure.
