Commanders and their loyal clone troopers battle with courage and determination in battles that will determine the fate of the Republic!
You probably don’t even know this multipack exists, right? If you do, then you’re a pretty savvy collector. Seemingly created to be both an extrapolation of the popular TARGET exclusive Order 66 two-packs and a need to get these very popular characters out to the market again, Hasbro developed the Clones And Commanders Gift Pack. Originally intended to be picked up by Toys R Us in the USA, those plans were shelved and instead Hasbro decided that the international market may appreciate it more. (SPOILER ALERT: They didn’t.) As a result , foreign retailers sat on this rather boring multipack and had to clearance it out before any collectors would bite. The set on paper isn’t terrible. But two odd additions likely rendered it an immediate failure. Instead of a repacked Revenge Of The Sith Darth Vader (III 11) figure and the repack of 2004’s SW [S - P3] [Silver] Sandtrooper Toys R Us exclusive figure, Hasbro should have teamed up another specific Clone Trooper with his Jedi General and we imagine the set would have gone over a whole heck of a lot better. While the cast of characters that make up the Clones And Commanders Gift Pack don’t really gel into any one scene from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith, the intentional pairing of “clone” and “commander” works better than we had ever expected. It’s just a shame the final product went off course a little too oddly. It might have been a success otherwise.
Based on the Battle of Utapau, Hasbro has includes the Utapau Clone Trooper and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Utapau Clone Trooper is a straight repack of 2006’s TSC Clone Trooper (SAGA 026) figure and Obi-Wan Kenobi is based on 2006’s TSC Obi-Wan Kenobi (SAGA 028) figure but this time doesn’t include all of the accessories including the soft-goods Jedi robe and lightsaber hilt. There are literally no differences between these figures and the ones we received a couple of years ago. Admittedly, it’s very nice to see the Utapau Clone Trooper available in the 30 (77-07) line again. It’s just a sham that only international collectors will be able to take advantage of this. The next two figures are the odd ducks. Darth Vader is just an obligatory addition here. Here is the main character in Episode III so including him here once again just makes sense from a merchandising perspective. The strangest figure in this set however is the aforementioned Silver Sandtrooper. Hasbro notes this figure with “this limited edition figure celebrates the dedication and enthusiasm of the entire Star Wars fan community and commemorates thirty years of the Star Wars experience.” OK, that’s very nice. But how about giving us an all-new silver figure, perhaps something from Episode III to fit within the theme of this gift pack? It’s just strange on a whole bunch of levels.
Hasbro has also included a pairing of Yoda and the Elite Corps Clone Trooper figures in this multipack as well. Yoda is a straight repack of 2007’s TAC Yoda Saga Legends figure (which is just a slight repaint of 2005’s ROTS Yoda (III 3) figure) and the Elite Corps Clone Trooper is a straight repack of the fun but screen inaccurate 2007 TSC Elite Corps Clone Trooper (SAGA 065) figure. Once again, no paint operation changes were made to either figure. Admittedly, the two looks great together and you can’t help but have your memories jogged to the brief but entertaining Battle of Kashyyyk from Episode III. It might have been wiser to include Luminara Unduli or a different more screen accurate Clone Trooper instead. For what this set it, it has its moments. But overall it is not ideal since all of its contends are straight rehashes from the past. Retailing with an MSRP of $34.99, this isn’t the best value out there, but it certainly hasn’t been overcharged either. Foreign collectors will likely pay higher prices for this if they want it. That’s just what happens when you’re a foreign collector anymore. Again, you’re probably not even aware of the Clones And Commanders Gift Pack. It would have been interesting to see how it might have performed at Toys R Us in the USA, but the will of the Force deemed it to ultimately not be released. Don’t worry, you have all of these figures multiple times already.
