A former smuggler and space pirate, Han Solo is the rugged, devil-may-care captain of the Millennium Falcon. Fast thinking and quick with a blaster, Han is noted for his narrow escapes from dangerous situations, many of which are the result of his own brash and arrogant behavior.
There is no doubt that when it comes to human likenesses for one-sixth scale figures that the interpretations from them are all over the map. Some are flabbergasted by the realism of one figure, while another collector looking at the same piece will think that it couldn’t be more off. Sadly, photography does little to help the debate either. So many one-sixth scale figures’ true likeness can only be seen with the human eye, while in many instances photography works hard against the likenesses and attempts to plasticize them. In 2011, Medicom Toy were looking to up the quality of their very popular Real Action Heroes figures. They opened up the experiment with an A New Hope version of Luke Skywalker. The likeness (depending upon who is looking at it) was excellent, but the sticker shock of the price tag just made the figure completely out of the realm of possibility for purchase for so many collectors. Medicom Toy raised the MSRP by over $100 just because of the new arrangement with Enterbay (who produces incredible and realistic likeness of famous movie characters) were designing the head sculpts. While not a fantastic seller, Medicom Toy was determined to see what else they could make to grab the attention of those who love everything in one-sixth scale.
In December 2012 however, the Ultimate Han Solo figure was released and we believe that this is the figure that will be the catalyst to open up the eyes of those into the most realistic one-sixth scale figures possible. Based on the character’s appearance in Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi, Han Solo is wearing a trench coat and a complete costume underneath and comes with a nice amount of accessories to complement him. He also comes with a gas mask from his appearance in The Empire Strikes Back. It’s a cool addition, but it’s confusing as well. Also, his belt is inspired from the one seen in Episode IV, as is his blaster pistol. But the real success here anyway is the head sculpt. As people who have taken pictures of this gorgeous figure, let us clearly utter that photography just cannot capture the beauty of this figure. We don’t think our pictures are terrible of course, but there is something that the human eye just forgives that a camera does not. Han Solo truly has a remarkable likeness. It’s one of the finest head sculpts we have come across in ages (in the Star Wars line). And while it’s definitely hard to swallow the higher MSRP for a figure in basically the same family as a Real Action Heroes figure, we understand Medicom’s confidence in this piece and why it can command the price it does.
Again, Han Solo utilizes the standard updated Real Action Heroes body. But it’s evident to us that extra fine touches were given to the costuming (and of course the portrait). The included trench coat is gorgeous. It appears a little more yellow to us than the costume in the film, but it is tailored in an extremely fitted manner so that it doesn’t interfere with Han Solo’s athletic build. The costume underneath which includes, a shirt, a vest, pants, boots, a belt and the holster are also expertly crafted to give Han Solo an absolutely amazing appearance when fully outfitted. We are thoroughly impressed. His blaster pistol is also stunning and fits like a glove in his sculpted interchangeable hand. Other accessories include a comlink, a set of interchangeable hands and a clear plastic display stand. Admittedly, the Ultimate Han Solo Medicom figure is truly that: ultimate. The Real Action Heroes Ultimate Unison sub-line, which is quite small at the moment because only two figures are part of it so far, has great potential. If there is a way for Medicom Toy to reduce the cost of the high-end head sculpt, we believe the line would become extremely successful. Sideshow Collectibles, who distributes a limited amount of these beautiful figures, will continue to provide the USA with some amazing Star Wars characters from Medicom Toy.
