Arguably, the biggest news of 1997 was the official Kenner/Hasbro announcement that the long-awaited Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba’s Prisoner) action figure would soon find its way onto pegs at retail. This momentous event was a dream come true for most collectors. And it was a bit difficult to process that we’d finally have a Princess Leia Organa action figure donning the gold bikini (and chain) as seen in Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi. The wait for this action figure was so eagerly anticipated that retailers like Toys R Us posted signs in their Star Wars sections that this version of Leia Organa was coming soon. Upon the figure’s release, it quickly became one of Kenner’s best-selling figures of all time. By the end of the 1997 calendar year, Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba’s Prisoner) was topping the critics’ polls of multiple action figures/collecting magazines and websites. And it was all for a good reason. Kenner/Hasbro created a feminine and arguably “sexy” version of Princess Leia Organa that we wanted in our collections since 1983. Thankfully, Kenner/Hasbro ensured that they got plenty of units out there to meet the outrageous demand the figure commanded. Although Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba's Prisoner) has its limitations like the inability to get the figure into a seated position next to Jabba The Hutt, for example, the figure is nonetheless one of the finest created for The Power Of The Force “2” line. Aside from being too tall when compared to other action figures in the line (like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo), Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba's Prisoner) is a gem, and we’re proud of what they accomplished. Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba’s Prisoner) will supersede any perceived negatives the figure might have because there is too much “fantastic” about it.
Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba’s Prisoner) comes with six points of articulation, the standard articulation system for most figures in the POTF2 range. The figure comes with a swivel head, swivel shoulders, a swivel waist, and swivel hips. This system of movement won’t allow you to get the figure into a seated position. Still, hopefully, you will be able to resign yourself to posing the figure in ways that she was standing in Return Of The Jedi, like at the Battle of Carkoon, for example. With a decent likeness, excellent attention to the infamous bikini, and a removable chain accessory, Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba's Prisoner) comes prepared into the Star Wars toy line. It is a faithful interpretation of the on-screen character. The chain wraps around her neck appropriately, and it has some flexibility to it that allows you to use on other prisoners of Jabba, or have Princess Leia hold it in different configurations as needed. While the accessory is excellent, we’d like to reiterate how wonderfully the tooling came out for Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba’s Prisoner). The sculpting is quite nice. The figure may not have a particularly “beautiful” likeness as we saw in the film, but Hasbro made vast improvements to their female Star Wars figures, and this version of Princess Leia Organa comes across as attractive and feminine. You do not have to worry about a “monkey-face” Princess Leia Organa action figures here. Those days are long gone. The figure has delicately sculpted arms, and the accouterments on the body like arm bracelets and jewelry are faithfully represented here. We doubt you’re going to find much fault with the action figure in this regard. Also, the paint job is very nice. We have never been crazy about the “white dot” that adorns all of the figures in The Power Of The Force “2” era in the center of the figures’ eyes, but it’s not too distracting here.
Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba's Prisoner) is a landmark action figure. Many believed the day would never arrive that we would have this version of Princess Leia Organa available to us as an action figure. But Kenner/Hasbro proved us all wrong and developed what will remain one of their greatest action figures from the POTF2 era. Certainly, as technology improves and as Kenner/Hasbro has time to revisit characters, better versions are sure to come. Regardless, this figure will hold a special place in the hearts of collectors. Sadly, and ironically, at the time of this figure’s release (and for the foreseeable future), there wasn’t a modern Jabba The Hutt figure or playset available based on Episode VI. So, Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba's Prisoner) feels a little out of place in the lineup. It’s our prayer that Kenner/Hasbro will produce a modern version of Jabba The Hutt, complete with dais to complete this pivotal seen in Return of The Jedi. There are multiple variations of Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba's Prisoner) when it comes to the figure’s packaging. We have no interest in whether a card back is the .00 version, or the .01 version, but for many others, it’s a highlight of their collecting experience. For us, however, it expends too much time and energy, and we get exhausted rather quickly on such things. However, we will draw your attention to the figure’s most noticeable card back differences. Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba's Prisoner) was first released on a “green” card back with a “hologram” sticker on the card back. But then samples of the figure begun arriving at retail with the sticker removed. The purpose of the stickers was to commemorate the Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition films, so as we reached the end of the year, it became less important to draw attention to them. Princess Leia Organa (As Jabba's Prisoner) changed the line for the better.
